    according to this site: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html

    for a 24 year old, male, who is 5'11" and 200 lb

    Totals: 2,910 calories in 24 hr

    Male 24, 5'11", 200 lb: BMI=27.9 BMR=2,053 MR=1,919
    Sitting - quietly (e.g., watching TV)
    590 calories in 6 hr 30 min
    Jogging - general
    476 calories in 45 min
    Eating - sitting
    102 calories in 45 min
    Computer Work (typing) 1,089 calories in 8 hr
    Sleeping
    653 calories in 8 hr

    so I assume this means that for a healthy male of my weight, if you want to stay at your weight.. you eat close to 3k calories if you engage in light exercise...

    someone who was muscular could very easily be 200 lb and not be overweight...

    so I think ~2k is on the short side for many people (to maintain)

    check it out, for 1.8k calories

    Female 24, 5'7", 120 lb: BMI=18.8 BMR=1,378 RMR=1,327
    Computer Work (typing)
    653 calories in 8 hr
    Eating - standing
    82 calories in 45 min
    Jogging - general
    286 calories in 45 min
    Sleeping
    392 calories in 8 hr
    Sitting - quietly (e.g., watching TV)
    354 calories in 6 hr 30 min

    so basically, unless you want to weigh 120 lb, if you are healthy you should be eating more then 1.8 calories

      I am always surprised about how much calories some things are..

      a bag of chips is generally ~800 calories

      a small thing of ice cream (like Ben and Jerries) is ~1k...

      those things are both very easy to eat all of, and are a lot of calories (And don't fill you up)

        I eat loads.

        Two bowls of cereal this morning, 8 slices of bread and butter for lunch already today.

        BMI scale has me at 'pre-obese' which is a joke considering Ive really only got the start of a little tummy.

          I eat quite a bit, when I can. When I'm not working, I generally drop to one or two meals a day, though. When I was on Atkins, I was eating all the time, and still losing weight. It's the best diet ever but it's so expensive.

              What are BMR and RMR?
              Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

                Let me state, HOW MUCH you eat is more important than WHAT you eat.

                I am not denying myself anything. But I have to limit how much of it I eat. There is a difference.

                Eating out is probably the worst, given the giant portion inflation in foods. Just look at McDonalds for example- the "small fries" were once the only size they had, and was so for about a decade or more. Today they give those only to kids.

                All food containers are getting bigger and bigger. No duh people are getting fatter.

                  I agree. Portion sizes are too large, and its not just a US problem either. Its the same way in Canada.

                    Back in January of this year I found out I was about 56 lb's overweight. I decided to start an excercise program to lose weight. I did not think to go on a diet because I did not consider my diet too terrible (no obvious binges on high calorie foods). Well, after 4 months of regular excecise, I lost 10 lbs, but I did that in the first 1.5 months. I had been in a plateau for the last 2.5 months.

                    Then I read a book about serving sizes, comparing what you are supposed to eat to what you really eat. Its amazing.

                    Well,seeing my method was not working as I wanted, I began to eat according to the guidelines of this book. In two weeks I have lost an extra 6lbs, and hope to continue.

                    So, to the point: Do you really know just how much you eat, compared to what a 2000-2500 Calorie diet really looks like?

                    Did you know that a 14 oz Steak is double one entire days recommended meat servings?

                    Of that a large bagel is more than half one day's serving of grains?

                    So, just how many calories do you really think you eat, specially if you live in the US?
                    Well it would be a rare occasion for me to eat a 14oz steak, that is huge...I am having a 9 or 10oz one this evening...but that is a rare treat...

                    I do admit that my portions are larger than those generally recommended though, although saying that I very rarely snack now...except for bananas and carrots which is OK. I am trying to get myself swimming again, despite some recent abortive attempts. As long as I get exercise my weight is relatively easy to control...

                      I think most Americans at least are horribly deficient in fiber intake because they don;t eat enough fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

                        Yeah, I try and have a couple of bananas a day and I generally eat cereals in the morning, I never touch anything greasy as a rule...

                          Jogging and swimming are the way to go. I used to do both regularly now I just jug semi-regularly but jogging for an hour burns 500-800 cals depending upon your size and road conditions (i.e. hilly or flat) while swimming in 65 degree water for 1 hour burns around 1200 cals. Doing that is like halfing what you eat in terms of balance of energy.

                          It's much easier to just skip desert or that beer and then go for an hour long jog 4 times per week then anything else.

                            Yeah, I used to go swimming for about an hour or so every other day...

                              # BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Basal Energy Expenditure or BEE. BMR measurements are typically taken in a darkened room upon waking after 8 hours of sleep; 12 hours of fasting to ensure that the digestive system is inactive; and with the subject resting in a supine or reclining position.

                              # RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Resting Energy Expenditure or REE. RMR measurements are typically taken under less restricted conditions than BMR, and do not require that the subject spend the night sleeping in the test facility prior to testing.

                                The Harris-Benedict equation for BMR (technically RMR):

                                * For men: (13.75 x w) + (5.0 x h) - (6.76 x a) + 66

                                * For women: (9.56 x w) + (1.85 x h) - (4.68 x a) + 655

                                The Mufflin equation for RMR:

                                * For men: (10 x w) + (6.25 x h) - (5 x a) + 5

                                * For women: (10 x w) + (6.25 x h) - (5 x a) - 161

                                w=weight in kg
                                h=height in cm
                                a=age

                                it will be different for people of different metabolisms.. of course

                                what your metabolism is is actually really complicated
