  • House Amends Patriot Act to Require Warrants for Library/Book Store Searches

Rep. Bernie Sanders, the next Senator from Vermont, introduced an Amendment to the Patriot Act amending section 215 to require a warrant for library and book store searches. The amendment died last year in the House 210-210 after last-minute pressure from DeLay et al. Now, it passed 238-187 with the support of 40 Republicans. IMO, it's almost certain to pass the Senate (which is generally less extremist than the House). The most onerous attacks on our civil liberties in the Patriot Act are still by no means defeated, but this here's the first Congressional victory against them.

Bush will veto. Or at least he's said he would. Let's see if he blinks!

That's good. That means all of the expired parts stay expired.

But then he'd have to veto the entire Patriot Act. That'd be the ultimate own goal.

So not all of our freedoms have been squashed under the Republican boot yet.

No, this freedom used to be squashed. Now it's unsquashed.

One small step against the PATRIOT Act, one giant step against governmental tyranny.

That's good news for all those lefty bookstores, whom I'm sure destroyed all their old records and stopped keeping new ones.
