Hm but the aristocracy was still the political elite (and sometimes also the military elite) in most big Euro countries over the 18th or even 19th century.

-first man made object in space - Sputnik (SU)
-first man in space - Gagarin - Gagarin (SU)
-first man in open space - (SU)
-first man made object on another "planet" - (SU)
-first man on another "planet" - Apolo (USA)
            -first space station - (SU)

Having this in mind it just seems not right to single out Apolo as the most important part of the space race.
            Sigh. Lets not forget Laika.

                1) Man walks on the Moon
The pinnacle of human achievement, and undeniably what will be most significant to the next millenium.

Hmm, I think what will be remembered of tis episode in a thousand year is Gagarin and not the first man on the moon which is only an extension IMO(a great achievement nonetheless).
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

The Fall of Byzantium- it gave a huge impetus to finding other ways of getting highly prized spices and luxury goods from Africa, India and China/Japan to the growing western nations of Portugal, Spain, France and England, and of course the Netherlands when they threw off the Spanish yoke.

It also meant the eventual eclipse of Venice, despite her privileged trading role with the Ottoman Empire, as now states would get their commodities and foodstuffs directly rather than rely on Italian middlemen.

The adoption of Hindu/Arabic numerals by the West is highly important too, so let's all give a cheer to Bhaskar, Fibonacci and his trading partners in Islamic North Africa:

'Liber Abaci' (Book of the Abacus) by Fibonacci (1170-1250):

"The nine Indian numerals are: 1,2, 3 (et cetera)...with these nine and with the sign 0 which in Arabic is sifr, any desired number can be written. "

The reason Apollo/Sputnik are important is because eventually a lot of people will be living off this rock, and these events are like Columbus' discovery of the Americas, to the colonization of space.

Even if that becomes a reality, who cares? So we live on the moon someday. Why would the moon be better?

The point is, they WOULDN'T BE ON THE MOON - a significant part of their lives, to be sure - if we hadn't gone to the moon.
