          Bismark's rejection of GB as an ally and Germany's dreadnaught arms race with GB. Also, Wilhelm's efforts to piss off the Brits.

          Germany's defeat in WW1 can be traced to these decisions. If Germany had won then Hitler would have remained an obscure corporal from Austria and WW2 in europe would not have occured. Had WW2 in europe not occured, then the Soviets would not have taken eastern europe, possibly the SU might not exist as Germany would have no reason to cut a deal with Lenin, because France would have quickly fallen. So... no cold war. Also, no nuke arms race since there would be no manhatten project.

                        Mine, in no particular order - These aren't really events, but more like series of events.

                        -The rise of Ghengis Khan and subsequent mongol expansion: the conquest of China, and the decimation of the arabs in the middle east and eastern europe.
                        -The arrival of the Ottomans, with it's direct consequenses - e.g. the destruction of the byzantine empire.
                        -The protestant reformation in europe.
                        -The discovery and conquest of the new world by europe.
                        -The renaissance.
                        -The rise of education, rational thinkers, mostly in europe.
                        -The french revolution, which is basically the beginning of the modern times.
                        -The rise of socialist thought, with all of it's good and bad consequences.
                        -The Meiji restoration, which has created modern Japan from an isolationist island nation, and influenced world politics and economics from that time on.
                        -The fall of the Berlin wall, which marks the true end of the millenium. ( unless something really big will happen in the next 20 years)

                            because naming 'single events' is always a stretch. e.g. saying that 'columbus landing on that godforsaken island' is 'teh 1337 3V3n7' is stupid. Euros fished near the shores of the new world and even established settlements a long time before that. It's the whole immense colonization thing that was so crucial and important in history.
