In an actual proper fight with physical contact, a switchblade will be more effective than a larger knife because the former is far easier to control... remember in a knife attack you're not looking to kill outright, you're looking to inflict pain or debilitating injuries (which obviously affects your defensive strategy). If you just want to intimidate, bring out the meat cleaver.

I know that too. But I walk miles everyday. I dont get the luxury of sitting in my car and viewing the world from a plush seat. Im out there walking amongst the homeless, the drug dealers, the thugs et al. I dont get a hard shell like a tortise so I need claws like a tiger!

The people Ive met from here even tell me I should carry some sort of weapon just in case the **** hits the fan.

This question assumes that I am put in a position where I cannot run, because if I have a choice between fight or flight I'd ****ing run!

You're more likely to have it knocked out of your hand, then have it used to cut your throat, put your eyes out, or for someone to carve some memorable (to you, at least, every time you look in the mirror) saying into your skin.

You don't need a big knife for a fighting knife - as Bull Simon used to say, what the **** are you going to do with it, sharpen it when it sticks out the other end?

You do need a proper size and fitted handgrip, and proper weight and balance of the overall knife. That means those little keychain boxcutters, or their big brothers at Home Depot, are out. The big brother versions can be effective against an idiot, but if you have to escalate against anyone with decent experience, or just too much size, strength and aggression for both of your good, then you'll have some serious trouble once your arm is broken and/or torn out of its socket.

I personally prefer Mad Dog's fighting knives for something smaller than an Ang Khola, but currently Mad Dog takes months to produce stuff and he doesn't give a damn, because he knows the waiting list for his hardware is a mile long.

And I walk all over the place, in and out of my neighborhood. Many times with my mom, and if someone approaches in a hostile manner while Im walking with my mom they better be ready to kill or be killed!

It won't cost you any money to get killed, and you'll have a long time afterwards.

An untrained fool with a weapon basically just rolls some virtual dice with "dead", "maimed", or "lucky as hell" instead of numbers. When you pull a weapon on someone, you may well force the situation to escalate to a point you can't handle.

The biggest benefit you'll get from martial arts (which isn't necessarily expensive, especially if you avoid the BS belt factories) is situational awareness and the ability to project a sense of confidence and capability that will let you avoid and/or deescalate confrontations.

Space, seriously, drop the blade or get a decent one. My suggestion is you drop it all together... there's something about dudes getting hurt who carry weapons of any kind more than the dudes who don't carry anything.

If it's for purely self defense, why not go whole 9 yards then? If you carry blade of any kind, then carry the best kind. If you get into knife fight, you don't want to be hanging on to a keychain. Then again, if you face a gun, that's it. Other people might conceal weapons too, so when you draw yours, they might draw a gun on you. I would draw a gun on someone who pulls a knife on me, if I had one.

Seriously man, in here, people carry knives, but they also use them. There's no ifs buts and ands, if you carry one and expose it, you're getting into something else.

If you are however going to carry one, get a real fighting knife, or switch blade. And LEARN how to use them or you end up hurting yourself. What you want to do with a knife, there are few fundamental things. Against gun there really is no set of rules if you carry a knife, since the only rule is stay away of line of fire which can be done close range only. And even then you should practice it A LOT and not check out a series of pics from some book, you will fail if it's not coming from your backbone.

Facing another knife, fundamentals are to not lose your knife, and to rather stick than cut. Again, stay out of the line of the knife movement, especially if stick. Keep distance. IN gun fight you want to be close (if you are unarmed and can't escape), with knives, you don't want to be close. Also if you are unexperienced, the best chance you have is countering.

If you are facing someone without gun and knife and you have the knife, the only fundamental rule is not to lose yours, because if you lose your knife, you'll get stabbed with it for sure.

Remember, you have to train knife fighting to be able to do it. It's simple, but not that simple. If you have to remember only few things and you can't train in knife fighting, then those should be that never lose your knife, and stay out of the range.

But I'd say in general if you carry a knife, bigger odds are you'll get hurt.
