Hey, the computer CAN be worked over.. I mean if there's a KILLER solution, I will take the effort to move the computer into the other room. All I need is a 10 meter cable, and if that doesn't work, a hub would do it. The work part is hiding the cable. IT'S DOABLE!

If you give me a few days, I might be able to draw up something. The workable space is about 5 by 3 meters, right? What's the height to the ceiling?

zopperoni, quickly looking at that pic, yeah, living room is that.. The height is... damn I don't know, regular height?

I have time... I have all the time in the world, the only criteria is that I need to make it work and seem like it was put together with an effort or professionalism

Argh. I hate all image editing software known to man.

Okay, the area near the computer desk is best left as neat as possible. Desk stays where it is. A comfortable but unobstrusive chair is needed. Keep computer desk clean. Maybe personalise area with a few momentos. Behind you, on the wall, a wall mounteed shelf would be good, with a mix of CD's, books, and little important things to you. We love this little gem from Ikea for example:

Now, for the other half of the living room. Near were ET turns into living room, a sofa up against the common wall between the room and the bedroom would do nicely. Now a low coffee table (I like glass and metal ones because they are effectively "spaceless" when it comes to the impression of volume). Two or three beanbags in a lazy half circle around the coffee table gives a casual impression, a place of people to sit, and acts as a break between the more friendly area and the more serious area near the computer. On the wall opposite the sofa, definately something....pictures? If it was me, there's be a simple and abstract painting behind the sofa and something more vivid and art deco on the walls. Vintage ads from the 20's are absolutely brilliant.

Now, could be I've gotten the dimensions all wrong and this will look horribly crowded. I've gotten so used to living in a box at uni that anything bigger boggles the mind.

Hmm, I'm not sure if you meant that the shelf behind the desk or me. If it's behind me, there will be the problem of opening balcony door. Also, I couldn't near reach it, but I guess that wasn't the idea... anyway that ikea thing looks quite nice actually

Also when you say you like art deco, can you point me to a website where I can see what that is?

In that case I would switch the location of your bed and your computer.

One problem though is that the sun shines right through the whole morning. It's direct. you can't escape it, and it gets horribly hot and uncomfortable. So if I put my bed there, every morning will be torture

Yeah. Though Montreal is actually colder than Helsinki it can't compare with the daylight thing.

We're only at 45.5 North so our longest night is 15.5 hours or so.
