  • What a difference a zip code makes

I'm getting ass-raped on my insurance premiums. Currently paying something like 1100$ for 6 months insurance (Geico) for the minimum allowable coverage under the law.

This is absolutely ridiculous, and I know it. I've checked a couple of other quotes (including Progressive), but they were all comparable.

I'm going to be moving out of my current zip code (21218) in the next two months. Probably to 21211, about a mile from my current location.

Checked out what this does to my rates on Progressive.

Drops them by 50% to around 550$ per 6 months.

All of a sudden I'm half as dangerous because I move a mile down the road.

****ing students all live in 21218. They really do suck at driving around here, and they're pushing my rates through the ****ing roof.

I would think that zip code based rates would be linked to the amount of break-ins/valdalism in said zip code. Student areas often are.

Given that I have no comprehensive coverage, I don't see how.

If somebody breaks into my car it's my problem.

Yes. That makes a little bit of difference, but nothing like the zip code.

Also, playing around with Progressive's online quote machine, it's better to have been caught drunk driving than to have been caught speeding.

You pay that much without comprehensive? That's insane.

Thanks. I already knew that. I'm driving a ****ing 13 year old Camry, and the insurance premiums for a year are as much as the car is worth.

                    It's this ****ing zip code.

Can't wait to move now. I've paid off the last installment of my old policy. Once I move I'm not going to be paying that any more.

                        No.

Not that collision insurance would add that much to the cost of insurance, given that my car is only worth (blue book value) 2500$ or so.

Just got a Geico quote for my new address. Though Progressive and Geico both have similar rates for my current address, Geico only drops my rate to 1000$ every six months for the new address (compared to Progressive's 550$)

                        **** Geico.

what about uninsured motorist coverage? If you live in poor neighborhoods there is more a chance of being hit by an uninsured motorist.

Or they could just assume that poor student drive like **** and are likely to get in an accident with you. Or you get in accident with someone else.

I thought actuaries were supposed to know what they were doing.

First off, how come I'm paying through the nose with a spotless driving record, a ****ty old car (which is only driven ~5000 miles a year in my care) and the legal minimum of coverage?

Secondly, why does a difference of 1 mile in where I park my ****ing car drop my rate by 50%?

Thirdly, why does one insurance company cost so much less than another for the exact same circumstances (not to mention the fact that I've now been with Geico for a year without making a claim).

I hate insurance companies they discriminate based on income, age, gender. horrible. If they could, they'd charge black people more insurance. That's the only one they can't discriminate against.
