  • Re: the Turks, I think the main fear in France is about massive Turkish immigration, and further displacement of activity abroad. Of course, the genuine racists don't want them dirty Turks at all, and I've heard actually quite a few people who genuinely oppose Turkey's entry for geographic reasons (Turkey being located in what we learn as being Asia)

        • Seriously, de Villepin is a terrible choice of a Prime Minister for two reasons:
          1. He has NEVER faced suffrage. He has never been elected. It's because of his open love for "high politics", and his dislike of dirtying his hands in elections. As a result, he's unlikely to be humble toward the sovereign people, and the regime's popularity will further go down the drain.

          2. He is in the Gaullian tradition of believing in France's status as a "special" country. Heck, I've just heard one of his recent speeches where he said "Go to the other end of the world, in the far Asia, and say you're French. You'll see the eye of the other sparkle with more stars than there are on the European flag"
The image of Europe has considerably suffered from the French arrogance, and only arrogance can come from such a general attitude, even if the holder of these beliefs is well-intended.

Edit: found the original quote: "Allez au bout du monde, en extrême Asie, et dites que vous êtes français. Vous verrez le visage de votre interlocuteur pétiller de bien plus d'étoiles qu'il n'y en a dans le drapeau européen!"

I haven't read it either, but I bloody plan to if Mr Tony Blair ever gets round to inviting us to vote on it. (We'll reject it too by the way, I'll tell you that now without having read it, or without anyone having read it).
              I reckon so too.

Still all a 'no' vote achieves is a re-think/re-write by the politicians. I think they really need to address the whole moving power away to brussels thing. No one likes the idea of politicians from another(culturaly different) country deciding on too many important and local things for them.

Imho i think we are a long way from building any sort of US of Euro zone, too much history and pride in individuality(which can be a good thing when not high jacked by far left/right politics).

All that i've heard about this constitution so far has made me feel like i'd vote 'no' when given the option. I think we can and should build a stronger united europe - just not under many of the proposals decided so far.

                  • YES YOU ARE. But you are one of the better Euronites. I mean, you don't belong to the evil ones, because you genuinely believe you are doing good, and when push comes to shove, I don't think you would massacre people but rather wake up.

You're kind of close of dropping into TRUE EURO category, but you are too intelligent for that category. Take that as compliment, it is meant as one. Ok to understand the little nuances is a complex but vital thing.

To put it in simple terms, you are the legit front for casino run by mobsters.

                        • I disagree (if that is what he wants to imply at the end) that we will get more members, even Russia on the base of the Treaty of Nice. That does not make any sense. Treaty of Nice works somehow, but it also stands for lots of things which people (not only politicians) do not like in the current situation of the Eu. The con was thought to improve this, if we now agree it was a good solution or not is antoher question. But as it turns out now the (current) con is dead - still the rules of Nice are IMO nothing for the future, nothing that will be sufficient for an even bigger Eu.

                          • Pekka, great posts.

Reminds me of the recent movie about Howard Hughes. In the movie, Howard visits Kate Hephurn family home. Of course, the family is wealthy.

They all regale him with the fact that they are socialists. At one point, after they have been rude to him for the umpteenth time, he says that they are socialists because they have money.

The conversation stops. They stare blankly. Howard storms out.

                            • The more one thinks about it, the Turkey issues probably will predominate in any country currently having problems with Muslim immigration. I don't forsee that Turkey has any future in the EU. Russia, though, might. Why? Well, it is a white, Christian country -- just like Europe.
