I agree. The ID card as such is no problem, but this part doesn't sound good at all.

You will have to show your ID to get on a bus or a train?!
Remember that few people take intercity buses or trains. A vast number of people take airplanes, for which you already need to present ID. Others rent a car, for which you already need to present ID in the normal course of business and besides which you have to have while driving

I don't know how this slipped through on the supplemental, but I guess that we haven't heard the last of it. What can be done in the dark of night, can be undone in the light of day.

The federal government now requires ID to get into any of its buildings. But I can't see this extended to state or local government buildings by federal government fiat.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. I guess if you are criminal, or illegally in this country, one might consider it a problem...
I don't carry a drivers licence. In fact I'm not sure where mine is, haven't driven for 10 years and have little intention of doing so.

And don't tell me you've never broken the law because I'm pretty sure you have at some point.

I think Ming's missing the point between voluntarily carrying some non-governmentally decreed items of identification and being compelled to carry a government issued i.d. card.

If you don't want to carry a driver's licence, then don't. Use public transport- it's healthier. You don't need to buy a photo i.d. card to travel on buses, tubes or trains either- you can pay cash.

You aren't compelled to carry a British passport at all times, or your National Insurance card.

It isn't (yet) against the law to leave one's residence in Great Britain without any form of identification, nor does a police officer have the right to stop you and ask for it without showing due cause.

You can still get by just fine in the US without carrying ID even with this law, if you're not going out of town.

I don't have a car and I don't have the need to carry my ID, although I do anyways, because I would forget it when I need it otherwise.

But if you travel from the Delaware Soviet to the Kansas Soviet you need to show your travel papers to the security police, yes ?

Not if you walk or bicycle between the two!

OK, you can Segway between the two soviets, if you choose. No ID required.

For conscience' sake, I suggest that the US import more Chinese colour television sets.
