  • Just my 2 cents:

Although the Guantanamo & Abu Ghraib situations certainly didn't help, does anyone doubt the Muslim response to the Quran desecration allegations would have been as intense without those events? Given the "death sentence" (can't recall the proper term) imposed on Rushdie for merely portraying Muhammed in a non-doctrinal light, I think you'd see rioting even without the antecedent atrocities.

Except NEws week really doesn't care about "containing damage" or any other political effects. Instead they want to sell as many papers as possible and being forced to retract such a big story damaged their creditability so they wouldn't have done it unless they had a very good reason.

              • it's funny to see how the same people who now raise hell over this are the same ones who said that it was ok to go to iraq based on faulty evidence...

that puts a smile on my face...

                      • As predicted muslim groups don't believe the retraction. Once these stories are out there and they're part of the folklore then facts and evidence just don't matter.

He's totally right that Abu Ghraib did have an effect. Newsweek didn't have total verification, but said, well there have been numerous reports of bad things we've done in Iraq and Guantanamo, so they were more likely to believe this report. I fail to see how they have no relevance here.

So it was Abu Ghraib that forced Newsweek to jetison even the pretense of journalism in a grab for sales?
