Although the Guantanamo & Abu Ghraib situations certainly didn't help, does anyone doubt the Muslim response to the Quran desecration allegations would have been as intense without those events? Given the "death sentence" (can't recall the proper term) imposed on Rushdie for merely portraying Muhammed in a non-doctrinal light, I think you'd see rioting even without the antecedent atrocities.
