I think he already did that by posting his problem here.

A better idea would be to impersonate a woman, and THEN ask your question.

You would have had your problem fixed by now.

I know, I've read the thread. How do you think I know he's banned?

              Is he still banned btw?

                Anyway some very logical steps:
                1. Make sure the connection physically exists and check if there is a green lamp everywhere, where there should be a green lamp
                2. Set up the connection on the operating system (assign IP addresses to the network adapter)
                3. Check if it works (hint: ping)

If you've come that far... you can be sure that the network works and now comes the part with making the service work.

So you fire up IE and type \\ of your own computer and then of the other to see if this works.
If not, well you have to check the firewall, then you should check if it works by using ip addresses instead of names,....

He recently logged in on Eventis, which he hates, so I suppose so

I have no idea whatsoever how to set up static ethernet IP on the XP.

On that I can help. Right-click on the "my network" icon on the desktop (I'm not sure of the Englsih name. That's "favoris réseau" in French). Click Properties.

You'll see your different connections: network, modem, wireless. Right click on your network connection, and ask properties again.

You'll see several icons in a new window, and the last one is likely to be called 2TCP/IP". Double-click on it, and set your IP parameters.

and why is the mask 255.255.255.0?

winipcfg sez mask is 255.255.0.0 on my computer
control panel -> network -> configuration tab -> TCP/IP -> properties -> IP Address tab -> Specify an IP address field -> specify the IP address, this is for win98, probably the same on winxp, don't know though.

the mask is that because its what I am using successfully for a static route between my linux box and windows box. try it out and see if it works.

the routing commands should be done via run or a dos menu, probably a dos menu so you can see error information.

After you set the IP addresses, run ping (from a command prompt) on the two computers like so: ping IP address. Check to see if each computer can see the other one.

there is no route between them, once the IP is set he can get to that part, then the ping may or may not work
