I did it in another thread on the matter. It might have been the last one of these. Basically the term football comes from England to describe any game played on foot rather than on horseback. Back in the mid 1800s, there were a ton of different football games, a kicking game, a dribbling game, and a pick it up and run with it game were ALL called football (with no real prefexes). That changed when the sports started to get organized. The English football association codified the rules to make football the kicking game. Well a few clubs weren't fond and had their own league of rugby football (named after the school the rules came from IIRC).
So you have association football and rugby football. Association Football (from the Football Association) becomes soccer (asSOCiation Football). Rugby football (colloquially called rugger at the time) was the precursor for American football and Australian rules football, both which have the same running with the ball. The sport of rugby, to this day, is officially 'rugby football'.
So basically people who say that soccer is an incorrect name for the sport are being incredibly ignorant about its history.
It's not incorrect, but it's not recognised as being the name for the sport in a VAST majority of nations. Only 5 FIFA nations (IIRC) call it "soccer"... so in the 98% of the rest of countries, soccer is not recognised as the name of the sport. In fact not even local language derivatives are.
Again, it's not incorrect, but it's not the common name for it.

It may not be incorrect but it is morally wrong.

Woohoo, what an ending for a season. West Brom came from the last in the league to clinch a spot. Though Norwich losing to Fullham 6-0 is rather shocking.

'survival sunday' was awesome, every team in the bottom four was safe at some point this afternoon
watched the norwich game, they got well and truly spanked, but if a couple of questionable decisions early on hadn't gone against them, things could have been very different. saints were the same **** they've been all season and i'm not sorry to see them go down. palace did their usual 'let in a rubbish goal in the last few minutes' trick to go down. baggies did well to win, though in all fairness i doubt pompey pressed them too hard after they scored the first goal.
in other news man city missed out on europe thanks to robbie fowler missing a last minute penalty and the mighty arsenal kept up their record of not drawing a last day game in the prem by losing 2-1 to birmingham, via an emile heskey goal for ****s sake!

Which ain't what Atahualpa was asserting (though I know you weren't defending his wrongness) .

Yeah... how crushing! Never trust Robbie Fowler with your season.

I found it amusing that Everton came in at 4th despite having a negative goal difference (thanks to Arsenal).
How did that happen? I thought that would put them 5th?

By the time they lost to Arsenal they had already secured 4th spot, Liverpool were too far behind to catch up.

Arsenal is saying they won't have Henry for the FA Cup Final. And Supporters United is trying to get MUFC fans to wear black in protest of Glazier's takeover.

I thought they were only 6 points apart?

Yeah... and which result do you know to garner you 6 points .
Liverpool had 1 game left and 6 points to catch up before Arsenal beat down Everton.
