I don't have a problem with gerrymandering to get like groups together in one district, but gerrymandering to delberately disenfranchise voters is a bad thing. For example So you had five districts, with a split 60/40 of voters. You could gerrymander it so that the districts are split 3/2. That's fair representation. You could also arrange is so that it's 4/1 or 5 /0 or even 2/3 or 1/4 the other way, so that the minority controls most of the dsitricts.

I'd rather abolish districts altogether, though, and simply have at large elected proportionally.

your first example of gerrymandering isn't gerrymandering. its only called gerrymandering when it is done to deliberate disenfrachise voters or favor one political side over another.

Ambassador Jolie can pull Brad Pitt. I can completely understand her not wanting to be slobbered on by Bill O'Reilly.

Pulling Brad Pitt is like getting Michael Jordan on your basketball team.

No it isn't. Republicans are actually over represented compared to their percent of population!

Democrats couldn't kill it if they want to because California has a mechanism for direct democracy. Arnies plan is to change how redistricting happens which is good but that doesn't change the fact that compared to registered Republicans as a percentage of population the Republican Party is over represented in Sacramento.
