      So tell us, what does "people skills" entail, other than being able to listen to the others?
      From the Wikipedia:
      Social skills allow a person to interact and communicate in nature with others.

      Examples:

      * Verbal communication
      o Small talk or conversation
      o Sharing and discussing ideas (politics, religion and sports are all common topics)
      o Teaching or learning

      * Non-Verbal communication
      o Active listening
      o Body language
      o Paying attention

      Traits that help social skills appear more polished:

      * Verbal
      o Smoothness of delivery (lacks stuttering, awkward pauses, etc.)
      o Intelligible speech (not too loud or soft, avoiding monotone but not dropping off the end of sentences)

      * Non-Verbal
      o Confident stance (standing up straight but not at attention)
      o Relaxed manner (not too tense, not falling asleep)

            Look at the man's posts, especially about business. Then look at his picture.

            This is so nonsensical as to be bizarre. You can tell all that about me from a modified baby pic?

            And Imran and I have met a few times ( ), so I have a feeling he would be more of a judge of my overall character than you. It's the difference between, well, seeing a picture and being there.

              You're not supposed to admit such things.

                You just know someone like that was bullied in high school. If you knew what high school kids were like.
                So anyone that knows about business is a nerd?!

                Coming from the computer scientist?!

                And I've seen him in person. He doesn't look like a man who'd be bullied in high school.... at least not more than any other ordinary person.

                The lot of you seem to think people skills is just another name for being a nice, perky, likable person. You are confusing charisma with people skills.
                That is a BIG part of people skills. You seem to think that people skills doesn't mean you have to be nice to most people, which is silly.

                To help out:

                People Skills 101

                * Accept criticism without taking it overly personally. See FoggingTechnique.

                * Criticize ideas, not people if possible.

                * Make a point to learn and remember everybody's name, even if you have to write it down or use memory association games.

                * Greet everyone in the morning with a pleasant "hello"

                * Being liked is sometimes more important than being right. Kissing-up works. That's true, and sometimes the converse is also true. Trying to win the approval of others doesn't necessarily gain you their respect.

                * Compliment others sincerely.

                * Avoid "tech talk" when talking to managers and customers if possible. They usually don't want to hear details unless they can do something specific with the information.

                * Trim your nails, shower, and wear clean clothes.

                * Keep your communications short. Use email to give details, not voice.
                “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
                - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

                  Don't be so sure that he hs agreed to even that much. Let the spinning.. er.. debating begin!

                  Actually, I'm rather disappointed. A really funny thread has just totally gone down the crapper.

                        YES.

                        Have you ever gone to high school, Imran?

                        I am nice to most people. What's silly is how you and JohnT have problems forming real arguments -- something that is quite essential to social skills, IMO.

                            Asher, if you act nice, many times the acting rubs off on yourself.

                            If someone is nice to you all the time, you should take it as a blessing and not question the content of their souls, as obviously it's good enough to be consistently kind.

                            Being dishonest is not being nice. But telling a white lie is a lot better than ruining someone's day. Knowing how to balance that out is just something that has to be learned from experience. I can't give you a formula for how mean something is compared to how much the recipient needs to know it.
