  • I am quite finished ripping some new ones...

Just spent the past few hours ripping 320kbps mp3s of what CDs we have in this house, a small fraction of the total number of 128kbps mp3s I already have, and a tiny fraction of how much I would have if I could afford to buy CDs on a regular basis...

Total space used just for the 320s = 3.07Gb
Total space used for all my mp3s = ~6-7Gb

So how much music do you have on your computer?

I only have about 10GB, all of mine are 192Kbps WMA.

I am afraid of new things, Asher. Please calm my fears of this "WMA" of which you speak.

192Kbps WMA is better quality than 320Kbps MP3, but smaller in size.

Hmm, I see three different WMA options in addition to MP3: WMA, WMA Variable Bit Rate, and WMA Lossless. What is the difference?

Lossless is the best sound quality, but eats up a lot more space. But I'm pretty sure you can't hear the difference between a song in WMA lossless and the same song @ 192 Kbps WMA. If you're not anal about sound quality, you can even drop to 128 Kbps and you probably wouldn't hear the difference. That means you could put a lot more songs on your Zen.

So, basically, I just wasted a bunch of hours and harddrive space for nothing? Lovely, I could have been writing my essay finals instead.

Welcome to the club. Before buying my iPod, I had about 6GB worth of songs in WMA. I erased them all. No need for thme anymore.

                              For your information:

Lossless audio coding enables the compression of digital audio data without any loss in quality due to a perfect reconstruction of the original signal. It is a topic of high interest for both professional and customer applications. While modern lossy coding standards such as MP3 or AAC can achieve high compression ratios with transparent subjective quality, they do not preserve every single bit of the original audio data. Thus, lossy coding methods are not suited for editing or archiving applications, since multiple coding or post-processing can reveal originally masked distortions.
