As for 5p permits, my station is one of the small suburban variety so the ticket office doesnt open too early on saturday, so the only way to buy a ticket is to use a ticket machine or permit machine.....of course if Ive only got notes then the ticket machines are notoriously unreliable for taking notes and thats reasonable enough grounds for not having bought a ticket, as long as you have a 5p permit. just make sure you get off at a station without ticket barriers (like waterloo) otherwise the inspectors will charge you full fare.
