Who says it was supposed to be a portrayal of the BOOK?

Who says I wanted it to be a carbon copy of the book?

I just thought that the movie'd be better if that aspect of the book were preserved.

You are missing the point... you seem to think the movie was supposed to be a rendition or portrayal of the book. Why? What about a rendition of the radio series? Or the television series? Or just an entirely different plot with similar background?

Adams never does the same exact story twice. There are always changes involved.

Besides the radio series was the original. Not the book.

You seem to think that a rendition has to be exactly the same.

Now that was funny! I used to sit listening (9pm on a Tuesday I think) when I was a kid. It's kind of funny that people think it started with the book, give it a couple of years and people will assume the film came out first and then they wrote the book based on the screenplay.

BTW for those in the UK they are repeating the TV series on BBC2 at 11pm on Tuesdays.

You are missing the point again... who said the POINT was to have a rendition of the book? Perhaps it was to be a rendition of the original... the radio series. Or perhaps the point was not to have a rendition of any particular piece, but all of them put together and jumbled up.

YOU'RE missing the point again. There's a reason why the book and the movie (and the radio series, etc.) have a common name. Because they share some other things in common. You seem to believe that a rendition has to be exactly the same as the original.

It was a rendition of the story, if the word story is appropriate to such a work. In that it did adequately, though not brilliantly due largely to the limitations of making it into a successful film, which has far less running time than any other format.

Bingo... the point wasn't a rendition of the book. So whether it was a good or bad rendition of the book matters not a whit. What it was, instead, was a rendition of the underlying backstory that featured in the radio series, book, tv series, etc.

I think it succeded in apealing to an american audience. Having said that i much prefer the 80's tv series, after the book of course.

Not a bad film, but it felt like it struggled alot of the time to me.Still its been doing well according to some reports so good on it
