I think I recall either Pekka or Dissident demanding I go to the gym when I got a job, and so I've joined up. I never really understood the whole reps thing, it confused me to see people sitting doing nothing at the machines I want to use! But now I get it. I shall add aspect that to my routine.

My routine usually consists of getting to the gym in time to watch Neighbours on BBC1, and I'll cycle for about 20 minutes doing that to warm me up. Then I'll work the muscle groups across the machines for about 30 minutes. I like to throw in some rowing as well, but only a couple of km for now. Nothing too strenuous, but enough to build up a sweat.

I'll try and do that three times a week or so, plus taekwondo once a week. Unfortunately I don't seem to be living up to my plans, like this weekend I needed to go at least once to the gym, but wasn't actually in my hometown area so couldn't get there. Naughty Gibsie.

I need to remove this roll of fatty tissue around my midriff. My diet is good, but I am in my mid-forties and my weight has been way too high at times.

I am trying to build muscle mass in the hope of getting enough meta-cycle to burn it off, but I am afraid that at my age it will be impossible. Dang, you know, there is this awkward moment when you disrobe in front of a young chick and you can see a flicker of her eyes as she sneaks a peek at the old geezer she is about to screw.

So far, none has run off screaming but you know....anyway, I would like to trim it up a bit. Suggestions?

Capt Dizle, hitting the weights is good, but to get rid of that fat, you have to burn it off with cardio.

Try doing some cardio first thing in the morning if you can do it in the morning. But don't drop your weight lifting.

You should probably do cardiovascular and weightlifting on different days, or at least do weights first- if you do cardio, you tire out, and then you get less effect from the weight-lifting. Also, if you can, do cardio before eating breakfast- you get more out of the work if you do it while still in a fasting state.

Weight-lifting also burns fat, through increasing your metabolism, and since you Capt. is getting up in the years, getting a bit of muscle back will do wonders.

My goal upon moving to Manila, where there's a health club in my building, has been to hit the gym 3 times/week for a low-maintenence work out on the treadmill and crosstrainer and eventually get my body mass index below 30.

I have never met that goal.

My problem is that the gym doesn't open early enough for me to go before work, and after work I want to spend my few waking hours unwinding with my family, not sweating with my co-workers while we all watch CNN.

                              cardio is overrated.

Simply put. If you take in less calories than you burn, you will lose weight.

I think it's overrated too, but if you are looking to get that chizled stomach, cardio is the way. There are some pockets of fat that I believe only respond to being burned off.
