So, go for it. Recreate the situation, but this time with many powers instead of two.

I'm sure some mutant will thank your lot for the benefit.

    • I imagine currency issues aren't in the domain of the WTO. If so, is there anything a nation can do if it doesn't want another linking to its currency?

No it's not a WTO issue... even though the currency has a major effect on trade, its still viewed as a national choice.

I'm sure if the US could do anything they'd do it...

      • PS If you insist on quoting Mearshimer to me

I wasn't quoting Mearshimer to you....

I'd like a real explanation of why it would be sound French policy to aid in the rise of a potential regional hegemon when the benefits to them are unclear at best or non-existant at worst?

I don't know the real reasons... all I was saying is that obviously France thinks it stands to gain... otherwise why would they have said what they have said (perhaps they just wanted to piss the Americans off? I don't know). I think Davout has explained Frances motives a bit better. I certainly never suggested it was sound policy... in fact in the post that you're quoting I suggest the opposite.

That figures. I mean the US at this point would send the Germans a nice 'go in and win' card if they invaded today, but nooo...

The Germans have no sense of timing.
We probably could beat the Frenchies in a conventional war, since our army is still more like a Cold War era army with thousands of Leopard tanks whereas the French try to reorganzie their army to be capable to make interventions outside of Europe. Though, it has to be a really fast Blitz this time, they have the bomb after all.

And I'm pretty sure, that Bush would discover his deep love for France if we were on the verge of creating the 4th Reich.

Especially so if the 4th Reich was presided over by Greens and Social Democrats

I'm glad you see no danger in France encouraging China (a nuclear power) to start a war that would involve the US (another nuclear power).

                  • They have themselves organised in Canada as well. They have been giving the federal socialists coniptions, and in a strangely Canadian way, stealing from the right too.

If it were to be built in the UK, we would be having second thoughts. Besides, while we would like to treat the EU as a single entity, at the present time this is impossible. Maybe once we continue to pack the EU with countries favorable to the US and unfavorable to France, it will all be cool.
I am lost; a no cost position for the US and the large spending of French money is not good for you. What would you want? It seems that you did not understand that ITER is a fundamental research project expected to last for 30 years or more.

Your attitude is not against France, it is against the project. But it is obvious that the US has enough energy for its long term needs.

At least until the Union?

The greatest uncertainty is demographic. Presently the German demography is not dynamic enough to keep the to-day level. If this is not corrected we could see in 30 years the two countries with the same population.
