Spiff, even though you are not an American, can't you see that there is a "small" problem with conservative speakers being routinely targeted for assault, and prosecutors doing nothing about it?

I think there is a problem whenever parts of the society take upon themselves (in a vigilante fashion) to stamp out free speech, whether conservative or liberal. It's bad, regardless of which side it comes from.

I may be more prone to see a problem when society exrts pressure than the average American, because the American ideology focuses on the fear of the State, which means that there is no room anymore in the "bad" department for societal pressures. Besides, I'm strongly against all forms of vigilantism, which is why I think the pie-throwers should have been punished proportionally to their assault by justice, and that's why I hope the vigilantes who broke these dumbasses' bones will be punished in a much harsher fashion. Not because they're rightwing dumbasses as opposed to leftwing dumbasses, but because they are violent and caused much more serious damage

But, I hardly consider a physical attack of any kind to be "non-violent."

But, another point. There is no evidence that the people doing this were "venting anger." The only evidence is that they attacked conservative speakers and Nader with pies that were effective both in humiliating the speaker (as Che contends) and shutting them up. One can rightly conclude that the reason for the attack was to do just this. Further, the planning involved in getting pies into the auditoria indicates planning and cold blood.
