The French are the only ones getting worked up about it. It's kind of funny from our perspective. Hopefully there are a few more french like Spiffor who see it for what it is.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

He doesn't exactly promote supranationalism. His idea of Europe is more akin to a "greater France", where Gaullian ideals of independance would actually have the means to do something.

See his public reaction when the new members opposed his Iraq policy ("they have missed an opportunity to keep quiet") to guess what he thinks about actually losing sovereignity to a construct that doesn't always agree with him.

Yep... throw Chirac out. And then whom will they replace him with? Le Pen, A neo-fascist nut? Jospin, A Socialist? (don't think the US would like that...). You can hate Chirac as much as you like, but you know he'll only ever be replaced by another Frenchman.

Le Pen won't replace Chirac anytime soon. He is loathed by at least 75% of the population, which means he'll never have the majority to become president. Heck, his party can't even come up with local majorities to get seats at the Parliament.

Jospin is out of the political scene. The "Socialists" who could replace Chirac will probably be much more acceptable to the US audience than Chirac, because they're not knee-deep in Gaullian ideals. And the Yanks don't care about our domestic policy (which isn't that different under the socialists anyway) except for the occasional cheap shot.

Chirac's greatest rival is actually Nicolas Sarkozy, from Chirac's own party, and the Yanks would just LOVE him. He has all the bearings of the "good Frenchman" to American eyes. He looks ambitious, voluntary, and basically believes we should imitate the US in most matters (he made it clear at leat on the issue of immigrant integration)

and in 1066 they made certain that a large slice of "anglo-saxon" culture would forever be French....

I'm not good with medieval history. What are you taling about?

I'm sorry to tell you that I AM worked up about it, much moreso than the average Frenchman of my age I just respond to that problem (which I perceive as a grave problem, and I already had several arguments on the issue here ) with a different approach than primitive defensive nationalism.

These three words are used "as is" in France, and have no French equivalent outside of Québec.

            What's the Quebecois equivalent?

The manufacturing industry in the US has also been killed for the same reason, but as God was never interested in this subject (as you know, there is no mention in the Bible), corrective actions were not taken, and will not be taken in the future, that is before the end of the word, which is anticipated before long.
On the other hand, there is broad support in the US to force China to revalue its currency, so cross-currents do exist due to specific interests...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Ther's quite a reason: Edgar A. Poe work was translated by a guy called Charles Beaudelaire.
Some claim the french text is even superior to the original. Unique case in translation history.

China is stubbornly reluctant to revalue the yuan under the pressure of the US, as if they were authorized to make their own decisions on that kind of problems. But it seems that, if they are not authorized, they have the power to refuse to revalue for the only reason that the US have a trade imbalance : they say so and they dont revalue, at least during the last 3 or 4 years. They will likely revalue in the future for meeting their own interests and at a date convenient for them.

                    I would not call that a cross-current.
