Is there still going to be two variations at launch then?
Its all in a state of flux right now, according to Gamespot:
Microsoft also hasn't discussed pricing or release dates just yet, and the contents of the final retail package are still in a state of flux. When we last spoke with company officials, they told us they're planning a worldwide holiday launch. And right now, the current package includes a 20GB hard drive, the base console, and a single wireless controller. Microsoft hasn't ruled out offering different retail packages just yet. Because the system components are so modular, the company can easily swap accessories in and out of the final package to create an attractive offering. It's very possible we'll see a completely different package after Microsoft gets more feedback on its 360 plans during E3.
Yet, according to Games Domain:
Speculation has been rife that multiple, differently equipped versions of the 360 will be available at the console's launch, like a cheaper version with fewer accessories and no hard drive. "Perhaps," said Allard. "The system has been created in a modular way, but the plan right now is to launch with just one configuration, unless feedback from next week's E3 trade show indicates this would be an unpopular move."
For all those pictures of the X-Box 360 on its side I just don't see that happening in real life. You can't easily put a DVD or a game disk into the machine when it is on its side like that. Also I heard a cool romur about there being a Linux OS that you can install on the Xbox that will allow you to stream videos, audio, and (the most important feature) play NES games. Basically turns it into a pc.

The Linux Xbox thing has been out for like 3.5 years.

I'd be upset if they shipped it with only one controller. That would be so obviously just an attempt to make people pay another $30-$40 in order to make the machine work the way 90% of users want it to work.
Considering the massive value of the equipment already in the box, I find it amazing someone would whine about coming with one controller...

Consoles have come with one controller forever.

Yes, I've never understood why people have complained so vehemently about consoles having a 200-300 price tag, especially when you consider how much cheaper that is than getting a comparable gaming PC, where a video card alone can cost 250-300 dollars.
