  • Well, it's true that with modern technology people can live a long, long time.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      • I've heard there has been an actual debate going on about resignation. According to the Beeb, JP2 even though about resigning when he was 80 (the maximal age to vote for in the conclave). Maybe Ratzinger will have the wisdom to resign, as he probably knows he's here for a transition.

        • Most people want:

          1) Women priests
          2) Married priests
          3) Relaxed rules regarding birth control
          4) Relaxed rules regarding homosexuality
Not most people, perhaps most people of some western states, especially the ones not being catholics and not believing in God.
And what people want is actually irrelevant.

Well I suppose there are more black Americans than black Catholics. And being direct from Africa rather than being from slave stock (??) may help in some peoples eyes for some reason.
There are way over 100mln catholics in Africa

Good idea. Perhaps then the Roman Catholic Church could do the same with its version of history too.

After all, they come up with 'propaganda' in the first place...
          What exactly do You mean?

          Another conservative smuck...

Personally, when I saw Ratzinger during the mass for JPII, I had a feeling he looks like a pope already, and when I've heard they've chosen someone, I was sure it's Ratzinger. But inside, I did hope for Latino pope, or even Arinze.

          • I was hoping for a latino or an african. I knew it was a long shot. But they would be more likely to support birth control. These european popes are sheltered from what goes in in the real world (the real world being the 3rd world). They live in European countries with low birth rates. They don't see the ravages of overpopulation.

I don't expect them to change their stance on homosexuality, or women priests, or married priests. That doesn't bother me too much.

But overpopulation really bothers me. That is something that affects me personally.

Catholic stance on birth control is not about utilitarism

Probably to signify that his former life as mere human has ended and his life as pope has begun.
Just like the use in many indian tribes to have an initiation ritus where you are given a warrior name, to signify the end of the youth and the begin of the adult life
