  • What are your thoughts on the new minuteman border patrol?

I have not seen any mention of this in the off topic.

I'm still not fully informed of the details myself. But here's some links to start you off.

Bush states he's against the minuteman border patrol. This should come as no surprise. Bush wants cheap mexixan/south american labor.

This article mentions the ACLU will monitor this group.

This article says a central american gang will target the minutmen, and teach a lesson to the americans. We'll see. I figure they are all talk, but we may encounter violent clashes between american citizens and foreigners. It will be intersting to see what the U.S. response will be.
NACO, Ariz. — Members of a violent Central America-based gang have been sent to Arizona to target Minuteman Project volunteers, who will begin a monthlong border vigil this weekend to find and report foreigner sneaking into the United States, project officials say.

    Are they vigilantes?

I really can't support what they are doing, but it doesn't upset me either. They are free to do what they want. They will find out what happens when they kill someone in a violent clash. They will face prison or be killed.

Founder James Gilchrist describes the Minuteman Project - named after militiamen of the American Revolution - as vital to protect the country from the security threat of uncontrolled immigration.

It is "a grassroots effort to bring Americans to the defence of their homeland", he says, which is "devoured and plundered by the menace of tens of millions of invading illegal aliens".

Wasn't "minuteman" the name for a nuclear missile?

Cool border guard. Each time an illegal alien crosses the border, a nuclear missile is launched at Mexico

yes it's the name of an intercontinental ballistic missile. A nuke.

But the name of the nuke of course took its name from militia during the revolutionary war.

Which is complete and utter horse**** because illegal immigrants pump more money into the government through (illegally collected) taxes than they take out in government benefits...they can't claim taxes owed back to them since they don't have SSNs and even applying for federal benefits risks drawing attention to their illegal status. I don't have a link, but in my Anthro class we're studying the plight of illegal immigrants ("undocumented workers" pc bs) entering, then leaving, then entering, then leaving, then entering the US again seasonally. Give me a f*cking break. Mr. Gilchrist, I'd pay $1000 to see you breaking your back 7 days a week for an entire season picking strawberries for sh*t pay, no benefits, and constant criminal exposure to pesticides. Call me when you've decided you want the job for yourself instead of some Mexican having it and you can collect your reward from me...

The "plight"? They aren't forced to come here

I don't have anything against them (besides the illegal status in the first place), but I don't have any pity towards them, either.

re: illegal immigrants, either kick them out or make them legal. It's stupid to say "oh, we shouldn't enforce the law because we need the immigrants" - if you have a law, you should enforce it or repeal it.

The Republicans want to let them stay to please business intrests, but want them to stay "illegal" so the racist/xenophobic branch of the party is not angered.

With the Mexican government publishing tips for illegals, it kind of lessens any problem I might have with people aiding the job of the Border Patrol.

Why is it that these rednecks feel the need to appropriate 18th century New England cultural ideals for their own twisted, xenophobic purposes?

I'm talking about the term "minuteman". Do they think it gives them legitimacy?

                      Of course.

The Mexican Government is not encouraging anyone to cross any border illegaly. They are simply recognizing the fact that millions do cross the border every year and end up in very bad situations, if not dead. Telling them not to cross will not work, so you may as well help them to do it safely. Its a humanitarian issue.

And they're not "tips", its merely advice on how not to die in the Arizona desert and what they're legal rights are once they reach the US (yes, even illegals have rights).

You're probably right. As a New Englander that pisses me off. They're running our culture through the mud.

The West really has a fvcked up reactionary view of illegals. Pat Buchanan's peasants with pitchforks hit high tide in Arizona, as I recall. I much prefer the more practical Texas view.

That said, these militias are there because the government either has been unwilling or otherwise unable to deal with the problem. If we took away those militias altogether (of which I am in favor), we would still have the problem.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Of course not. People living in poverty shouldn't do anything about their condition should they, ..... oh wait
