By normal standards, 8.2 is pretty big.

Yeah, got it, wasn't there when you posted originally. Apparently they're not all THAT quick.

But holy ****, that's pretty huge. Hopefully it won't cause another tsunami.

Let's hope people are able to move inland to safety.

Is it normal for there to be 2 big earthquakes on the same faultline in such a short time frame?
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Maybe you just needed to refresh, because that's exactly where I saw it before I posted it.

Drudge has it as 8.3-8.5 magnitude.

Aftershocks tend to be more powerful the more powerful the original quake was.

I doubt there's still any substantial warning system in place for most areas affected.

It's certainly should be anticipated, as it's a very active fault line, and there are usually sizeable aftershocks months after big quakes.

They were planning something after the tsunami, gotta hope that at least something basic is in place by now. Though it does seem doubtful.

God, I have this pit in my stomach. I can't stop thinking about all the people who may right now be clueless that another tsunami is coming...and there's nothing we can do about it.

I don't suppose there is any way to warn from planes? I mean, the USAF has planes that fly around and serve as frequency jammers and such, but perhaps some warning system based on similar planes could be invented?
