Police estimated the crowd at about a million, The Associated Press reported. Taiwan's population is 23 million.

So Reuters and AFP (see above) say 240,000. Associated Press initially said a million and your 500,000 seems to have come from the New York Times. Guess we'll probably never know who is right, although I'm leaning toward the Euros on this one...
