It doesn't matter if they are evil or not. They just do what they do. A system is required to take peoples actions into consideration.

The first thing you need to know about Chinese business practice is that there is ONLY the short term.

That means that polluting is actually a rational and profitable practice. And in China most anything that is profitable is acceptable.

Contributing factors: Most Chinese don't care much about the environment. Most Chinese also could not care less about the welfare of anyone they don't personally know.

Put these together and you have colossal-scale ecological disaster.

Good article, Og, and it underscores the point that China's rise to economic dominance is anything but an absolute certainty.

This is *exactly* the kind of problem that can throw a nation off track in extreme ways. 2.8 Billion to provide clean water for 57 million. At that rate, China would have to spend...what...5-6 Trillion bucks just on water?

(I hope GePap doesn't see this thread tho, he'll have heart failure!)

This kind of thing has to be pissing off the rural poor in China. If China's economy does implode there could be hell to pay.

Gonna be hell to pay anyway. The people who are getting rich off of the growth in China's economy will wind up having to spend all their spare coin on something to drink.

But I agree with your basic sentiment and think that this kinna thing makes such an implosion more likely, rather than less likely, for sure.

Perhaps even a capitalist revolution to prevent the horrors of central planning.

I'm sure its a neo-con conspiricy - they must have encouraged china's new capitalism, knowing that it would ferment civil unrest and maybe lead to the overthrowing of the communists.

anybody want to go into business shipping bottled water to china?

I think the people in the cities get clean water. The govt doesn't care how many rural poor die, because there are too many of them anyway.

probably have less political clout too. Still it sounds like the makings of a sci-fi future distopian movie, where they all end up starving after realising no one is making the food anymore.

                              Central Planning! Nooooo!

Child of Thor...good plan...imagine the customer base!

Kid - yeah, the problem is tho, China's growth is...what, just shy of nil?

They lose too much of that oft-touted population edge and they fall off the horse, but good.

So sad when economic principles (like diminishing utility) get applied to living, breathing humans, but I suspect you're right, and that is, in fact, what is occuring.

Water is usually centrally planned even if it's privatized.
