Stevens... isn't he the current überporkmeister-guy of US Senate (the last one was the 90-year old guy from WV)?

I believe the claim wasn't about destroying the herd but about modifying or possibly even blocking migration routes. Personally, I'm for more oil drilling but I'd like to see a hefty government surcharge put on the leases and all of that money locked in so that it can only be spent on mass transit, parks, opens spaces, eviromental clean up, and alternative energy. This won't happen but it would be very nice.

It took us 4 years to go from zero to the creation of the first atomic bomb.

It took us 9 years to go from a space program that was a joke to one that put a man on the moon.

We're America, dammit! I can't believe we can't come up with an alternative to oil. We're just not trying, or not trying hard enough.

And we won't start trying untill the last minute because the oil companies want to get a profit from every last drop of oilo before it runs out.

Rufus and Odin are 100% correct.

We could do it VERY EASILY if we REALLY WANTED TO.

The damn diesel engine was designed to run on any kind of oil, including plant sources, for over 100 freaking years already!!!

Disrupting a pristine wilderness for the relatively small amount of oil in the ANWR only makes sense if our energy policy is driven entirely by the assumption that there's no alternative to oil. Change that assumption, and we can leave the animals to frolic freely -- and, more importantly, we can finally relegate Middle Eastern Petrostates to the Third World status they so richly deserve.

Perhaps we should also hold a referendum in Alaska to see what the want to do with it... the results may not be music to the environmentalists ears.

There is no alternative to oil at this time. I prefer to make decisions based on how things are, not how we might want them to be...
