He did not. That's why the case was substantiated.

Agathon you are having a problem right now. Even communists here are agreeing with my side of the issue (fire Churchill).

It saddens be because most of you here are supposed academics, yet you defend plagarism if it is someone on the left. If a conservative professor (if there are any) did the same thing, you'd expect him to be fired.

I don't know abou falsely indian. He was on the Bill Maher show, he looks pretty indian to me . He's not 100%, but if we are going to call Halle Berry black, then we can call Churchill an indian.

Myself, I'm like 1/8 native american, but I don't look it. I share no physical features, so I don't consider myself a native american.

I don't defend plagarism, but it's a pretty minor offense. It's not like the guy eats babies or anything like that.

But he is considered a professor who is supposed to maintain the highest academic standards... he committed a major offense in the academic world and he should be fired because of that.

I accept Agathon's authority on the subject. If he did plagarize maybe he should be fired, but it seems to me that he won't be treated fairly because of his political stances.

Agathon may be a professor (correct me if I am wrong), but he is not credible and has the tendency of defending errors. He won't be treated failry because of his political stances? What BS.. so they should keep him even if he does commit academic dishonesty... because they are afraid people would perceive he is being politically persecuted? If this was a right-wing professor you guys would be calling for his execution!

Man, I wish my left wing professors were intimidated into keeping their views to themselves, maybe I could have been taught something in the courses as opposed to being held prisoner to their rants.

BTW, at my college which was free of this Aggie style leftist BS and actually had integrity, this would have been a ten minute honor court debate before announcing his expulsion (and that just for forms sake).

Aren't you a teacher Aggie? Next time you find a case of plagarism I hope you distingish between the left ones and right ones. Would hate for you to inadverantly please the right ones.

How exactly is this a left/right issue? Plaigiarism sucks regardless .

Thus far, patroklos, I have only confronted one extraordinarily biased left wing professor in my four semesters at Cal State Northridge. To my surprise most professors were in the center, or did not share their views. But that's an entirely different issue.

Did Ward Churchill commit plagiarism? Yes he did and it was substantiated. He should be fired for the reason of plagiarism. Left, right, up, down, up his own arse.. it doesn't matter which side of the political spectrum he is on.

Yeah, and he's a fake Native American as well. I predict that he'll come back on the public radar scope in the future as a right wing pundit after he gets religion.

Poor Aggie & Kid have no clue about how serious academic circles take plagiarism. It is one of only a handful of unforgivable crimes which will cause a tenured professor to lose his job.

Its not plagarism if he didnt claim the work as his own. Based on what Agathon has posted he did not do that. In essense he acted as an editor. His 'crime' is that he published the poem against the wishes of the author. That may be academic 'bad form' but if the copyright is owned by someone else (and it may well be since it is already published work) then the author has no leg to stand on. The university may decide, however, that acting in such a manner amounts to a breach of ethics and fire him for something like 'impugning the reputation of the university'.
