  • Saddam was in a house, not a hole: Ex-Marine Sgt

A former U.S. Marine who participated in capturing ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the public version of his capture was fabricated.

Ex-Sgt. Nadim Abou Rabeh, of Lebanese descent, was quoted in the Saudi daily al-Medina Wednesday as saying Saddam was actually captured Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, and not the day after, as announced by the U.S. Army.

"I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced," Abou Rabeh said.

"We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed," he said.

He said Saddam himself fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then they shouted at him in Arabic: "You have to surrender. ... There is no point in resisting."

"Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam's capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well," Abou Rabeh said.

Abou Rabeh was interviewed in Lebanon.

Link? I've seen photos of them taking Saddam out of a hole, not a house. Pictures are less of a bad liar, then what someone says.

well it would make perfect sense, but then again I don't think this has any significant importance in itself. If they could get him to surrender without too much hassle, it would be worthwhile to ditch him into a hole, take good pics and get him out saying 'here he is'. To portray him as an old man who is tired and has a bad back, hiding in a dirty hole. This image is of course more important to the locals than to us. To see him as weak, and not the man he once was. So they wouldn't fear him and would embrace the liberators.

Then again, maybe he really was found in a hole. Either way, I don't see this as anything huge, as anyone would take the chance to make some propaganda at that point, that could have some impact rather than not do it.

Chances are he was a found in a hole because photographic evidence proves so.

But why Saddam in the Santa beard?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Someone could always say they put Saddam in a hole & took pictures after the gun battle and capture too.

But, if they found him in a house and there was "fierce resistance" and danger (at least 1 person died), I would have thought that they would play up that story like no tomorrow and make the soldiers (including the dead soldier) sound like heroes. Think of the Jessica scenario or when those individuals in the spy plane were held by China and later called "heroes" simply for being detained. Not much story to say Saddam was found hiding... everyone already knew he was hiding.

After they had Saddam, they could manipulate/discredit his image any way they wish. Like they did with him unshaven and in the orange jumpsuit during the lice/health inspection.

Either way, I don't see this as anything huge

to denounce the US Army, and to defend the honor of the US Marine Corps, which, at least in public, had no units anywhere near Tikrit at the time. : )
