What's your personal beef with tories anyway?
Let's see: Margaret Thatcher was first elected Prime Minister on the evening I went to see Roxy Music's reunion Manifesto Tour concert in Birmingham. I returned home to find that the British equivalent of Kali was now in charge.

Many years later, having suffered the worst unemployment since the Great Depression, the most unpopular prime minister since WWII, urban decay, race riots, the sell off of most of the nation's assets and privatization of everything bar the atmosphere, record levels of homelessness, censorship on an unprecedented scale in the 20th Century outside of wartime, institutionalized government racism and homophobia, we eventually ended up with Tony Blair.

When Blair is a better option than what has gone before, the alternative must have been bad.

As you may be aware from having grown up behind the Iron Curtain, Thatcher was very fond of spouting off about government repression, censorship and freedom for unions. But only when these problems were far away, in Poland, Soviet Russia, East Germany or China.

At home, it was a very different matter.

I was sixteen when she was elected. Imagine having your 'best' teenage years with that castratress in power.

Then I went to university during her Falklands' War era, when a woman who had been profoundly unpopular was reelected after her government had been instrumental in sending the wrong signals to Argentina over the British willingness to maintain a presence in the South Atlantic and had ignored intelligence warnings about the prospects of Argentinian belligerence. Brave men died to save her face....

She embodies for me the worst aspects of petty bourgeois provincial Little Englandism- philistine, racist, putting on a mask of religion when it suited her, snobbish, uncultured- as Oscar Wilde would have said of her, 'she knew the price of everything and the value of nothing'.

Take any renowned Lithuanian composer, painter, poet, novelist, songwriter, dancer from the past.

Imagine that they are replaced by the Pop Idol or Eurovision equivalent.

That's how today's bunch of non-entities compare with the glory days of cultured 19th Century High Toryism. I've read some of Disraeli's novels, listened to Churchill's oratory*, and read Burke's political works and speeches.

The current party are the dregs of the so-called 'Thatcherite Revolution' when she surrounded herself with lily-livered yes men and 'greige' nobodies. Michael Howard was one of them, and there are still a few of the garageiste 80s tendency too.

                          * Churchill is a 20th Century Tory aberration- his WWII stint overshadows his earlier disasters and later peacetime period as Prime Minister which was not terribly successful either.
