    [artist]\[year], [album] ([medium], [label])\[tracknr] - [artist] - [title].mp3

each directory also has an empty file showing the encoder, bitrate and stereo mode

    example:
"lame 3.93 180-188kbps joint stereo vbr"

My itunes is organized by album, alphabetically. So Byrne's "Rei Momo " immediately follows Bowie's "Reality".
"mono has crazy flow and can rhyme words that shouldn't, like Eminem"
      Drake Tungsten
"get contacts, get a haircut, get better clothes, and lose some weight"
      Albert Speer

Yeah, that's what I use too. It sorts everything automatically. I have everything sorted alphabetically by artist.

But I've also created specific playlists based on mood. So I have playlists named "fun", "sad", "optimistic",
"cool", "romantic" and "worship". That way I can listen to certain music depending on what mood I am in.

Currently an absolute horrific mishmash of my method of:

          General Music Folder/Artist/Album/Song

And my friend's (who I just got a lot of music off of) system of:

          General Music Folder/Alphabetical Letter/Album/Song

It's taking me ages to bring order to his chaos.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

            I sort them by \artist\album.

I just sort them by artist. One folder for each artist
This space is empty... or is it?

                \letter\Artist\Title.

                as in:

                \H\Hay, Colin\Overkill
                \H\Haddaway\What Is Love
                \Cl-D\Clannad\Trathnona Beng Areir
                B♭3

Album directory within artist directory within general muics folder. I don't assign an artist directory until I have about 10 songs by them.

I've just been using artist names as subfolders for now, though when I find dupes between CDs (i.e. with live/best-of CDs) I add the CD names as well. I've almost got every CD I own ripped now, putting me up to almost 1200 tunes.

And for the Linux users out there, I highly recommend madman. Not only do you get a database view of things (artist - album - track, the usual filters), you get to rate all of your songs from 0-5 stars and have those ratings taken into account in its Auto-DJ feature that will generate random playlists for you.

how do you get winamp to do that?

I have winamp, but it just seperates them by artist, it doesn't seem to take into account the album. Pluse it seems so small.

I usually use musicmatch. But I'd like to use winamp, because I think it's less resource intensive (for when I play games with it on the background). I'm not sure about that though.

I used musicmatch to edit all of my tags. Because downloaded songs usually have all the wrong information in the tags. But I haven't edited the actual file names, that would be far too tedious.

all of mine are in one folder as well.

You guys don't actually open up the folder to play tunes do you?

I open up the player first, and then find what I want to listen to. So how my folders are set up is not an issue.

I don't bother organizing mine, they're all in one big folder. iTunes does the rest.
