Insults are a time-tested diplomatic procedure to let somebody know they've pissed you off.

Politeness goes so far. When it's met with persistent rudeness you send a little bit back. Nothing serious. Just a few shots across the bow.

It's the perfect avenue, BTW. He's no longer in government and so his opinions can't be held to be the responsibility of the current government, but his opinions are probably still influential with some of the higher-ups.
