  • How would you "fix" Star Trek?

Alright, we talked about this in like 3 other threads already, but I thought I would bring it up again, inspired by Starchild's "risquee" fan fiction film.

It seems to me there that the formula for Star Trek needs to be thrown out the window completely. Lots of you are probably all, "duh."

The gritty, edgy theme of Battlestar Galactica seems to have it right. Not just sci fi geeks can watch this show. I thought Battlestar would be lame but when I watched the movie, I was instantly hooked. It was fresh, fun, and gritty.

As for Star Trek, I'm tired of the:

    1. Wide shot of the Enterprise in space
    2. Captain's Log, blah blah
    3. Bunch of people standing around talking about crap
    4. Boring, uninspired synthesizer music, segwey to next scene
    5. Beam down to the planet, meet new species
    6. Boring, uninspired synthesizer music, segwey to next scene
    7. Get into a misunderstanding with new species
    8. Boring, uninspired synthesizer music, segwey to next scene
    9. Come to a resolution with new species through talking it over and mutual understanding
    10. Oh wait, that's not going to work, we have to come up with some imaginative copout that's never been tried before to resolve the situation.
    11.

The new Enterprise show had LOTS of potential. The cast was top notch, all young, attractive, dynamic actors with lots of potential. The first show was promising with lots of ACTION and edgyness. The villians and new species were dynamic and mean, showing a dark side to them not seen in a few years since the franschise is often sterlized and over idealistic.

But after the first few shows, the story faded. The show reverted back to 30 year old story lines. Time travelling must have lost half of the audience.

So how would you fix the show? Are the producers too afraid to alienate the loyal fan base extremists?

First off I would put more violence into the show, get rid of the tired old segwey's and plot structure that was laid out above. Time travelling is forbidden. The show needs to exist on its on, in it's own time. Put a couple of hot chicks in there but don't make it so obvious with silly body suits. The vulcan chick for example did an outstanding performance, so no need to push her into the sexpot role.

Get back to the common themes of conflict between people. Something we can all relate to. Put more infighting into the show. Let us see characters die and feel bad that they do. And get rid of that tired old, BORING synthesizer music already.

Not everybody has to get along or feel safe all the time.

That's the main problem with Star Trek.

    It's too safe.

Star Trek has to be restarted with a movie, not a TV show.

It needs to have new characters that could then be placed on TV, with of course some old mainstays making cameo appearences (in the movie, that is).

It needs writers that know Star Trek but aren't bogged down by the past.

I really feel that it can only restart itself as a franchise with a movie, because the drama on TV these days is far too focused on dissection (CSI, 24) than introspection (Star Trek) of a plot/character/etc

They should take a much closer look at DS9 and figure out exactly what they got right there.
By which I mean post season 2 of course, after Babylon 5 started to have an influence - an actual story arc rather than the same tired old 'new planet each week' syndrome, and saw DS9 adapt accordingly.

I hadn't thought about that part of it. (Dissection vs Introspection).

In terms of the introspection, I find myself saying, "I already thought about that theme 10 times already!"

I was going to mention 24. It has alot of reused themes this year but still rocks! as good as ever.

Yep, every Star Trek series gets good when there is an actual story arc. (Cept for that time travelling crap). The Klingon Civil wars were awesome in the Next Generation.

Backstabbing, betrayal, moles, polictical alliances, infighting, those are what makes good plot twists.

          Even the WWE understands this.

Don't bring up WWE. Have you SEEN the current storylines?

Its probably the most pathetic its been since they had an evil Dentist fight a Repo Man.

They've been doing pretty good with JBL though, he's one of the best villians ever. Now that he has added super hottie Amy as his sidekick too.

Although I think the best plotlines were in 1998 when Stone Cold attacked McMahon in the hospital with the heart defiballator!!!!

              Where is Stephanie anyway???

                1. Get rid of Rick Berman.
                2. Decanonize the abomination that was Enterprise.
                3. Respect previous traditions, but don't be afraid to tinker with the formula. Realize what can be changed and what can't. ( i.e., soft rock for theme song, bad fcuking idea; story arcs, good idea.)

                  Replace Berman with Sam Raimi.

It may still be crap, but at least it will be fun crap.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

The new captain, of course, would be Bruce Campbell.

You're far behind on the news, man.

Amy's gone...she left because she couldn't deal with the "boys-will-be-boys" attitude in the locker rooms...but then, she was a model that expected a whole row of seats to herself on the planes.

The only hope that they have are Batista and the ECW PPV that they will be holding in June...

Stephanie is terrible dude...of all the women to on WWE tv, she should be second to last.

                        Now Lita...that's a definite

                          Nice pick.

Talk about GRITTY, DYNAMIC, and just outright FUN.

He would have a combination of alot of traits that only Shatner had.

It's a shame they wasted Baccula on this series. The whole cast for that matter, was loaded with talent. My favorite is the vulcan chick, and (honestly) not because she is wearing a tight body suit. I thought she was an awesome first officer and was really shining latley as the Captain's confidant and there to give him sound advice when he needed it. I like it when she slips up and shows human emotions, that's the best part of her character.

Are you serious?!?!?!?!? I thought she was just on last week????? I thought that was just part of her character.

Really? I thought she was the best, she could really piss off the crowd better than any of the other women out there. She seemed to be the best speaker I thought.
