  • Al Jazeera still hasn't admitted kidnapping of US Soldier was fake

An update now on one of the more bizarre stories to come out of the Iraq war. Remember that supposed kidnapping (search) of a U.S. soldier several weeks ago that actually turned out to be a doll?

Well, we now have an apparent confirmation of the faked picture from the faker himself. The SITE Institute (search), which tracks terrorist Web sites, found a Jihadist Web site, in which a blogger named “al-Iraqi4” admits to making the whole thing up.

The Internet posting included a picture showing the fake shot being set up and a note from the faker, which said:

“I am a 20-year old Iraqi young man. I am unarmed, independent and do not belong to any party or group. I apologize to all the parties and everyone, for I meant nothing by that [no harm]. The picture was a scheme that I made up with a toy that I bought with $5. Today I am announcing that this news was made up, and that the picture was of a toy that I worked on with the help of some children.”

Al-Jazeera (search), which ran the story of the kidnapping as though it were the real thing, has not yet shown or described how the story was faked.
I guess there hopes were too high over the soldier's kidnapping they couldn't bear to report the truth.

Why? When even CNN won't admit errors (they have people resign so they can avoid doing that), then why should Al Jazeera? AJ is just doing their best to be a real news outlet...

And that's why they should suck it up and admit their error. Everybody makes mistakes... but we are talking credibility here. It's better to admit the mistake then let it stay out there that you fell for the story, and didn't follow up on the real story.

Why should they be held to a higher standard than CBS News, Ming?

Just because CBS is bad doesn't mean it's ok for other stations to be.

Al jazeera is an interesting station, compared to most Arab stations it's shockingly accurate, sadly that's not saying much most Arab station are state run and heavily censored.

Did anybody really get worked up about this? It took all of about 3 hours to be debunked and sure as hell gave me a laugh when I saw the picture that had been passed off as the real thing.

Hmmmm.... many people here were demanding that CBS admit it's blunder... and eventually, CBS did admit their mistake (while they were being dragged kicking and screaming)

So all I'm asking is that they be held to the same standard I would expect from any news source that wants to consider itself credible. Just because some other news sources don't admit their mistakes, doesn't make it right.

IIRC, they've NEVER admitted the memos were forged, merely that they did slipshod investigative work and rushed the story, but there was no underlying bias mind you.

I laughed my ass off as well... My comment was aimed at the typical "ignore the issue/change the topic and troll the right wingers" response.

Al Jazeera got suckered... they should admit it and move on.
