Oh, I couldn't leave just yet.

Agathon, I enjoyed the part where Steve Jobs finds a "bug" on his comp during his demonstration. What bad timing for the comp to freeze.

There should be new laptops on their way out right now.

Intel just released a new Centrino platform.

And I don't see how it's "easily bypassed" -- the thing comes with one touchpad button...you can't add another.

IMO they should've used the Black Eyed Pea's original version called "Let's Get Retarded", not "Let's Get It Started" before Jobs got on stage.

Some of my software is actually legal now.

For some of these schemes you do need to pay a nominal annual fee(20 - 30$) though but you can download ANY MS product of your choice (not games and there is a max download ).
You're even allowed to use as them long as you want, so even when you've finished school.
Do note that an academic version of Visual Studio for example will not allow you to build a stand-alone executable...or so I am told.

I've never seen that clip of Jobs' Mac locking up.

It's awesome. It's particularly awesome because for all of the crap we hear about how stable and sophisticated MacOS X is, it's clearly not.

It's also great because I remember all the harping Bill Gates got from all of the Mac-heads when his Windows screwed up in a demo, too.

There was a better one a few years back when someone forgot to charge his digital camera and screwed up his presentation on digital photography. He was almost swearing.

Did you see John Mayer and Garageband? That's pretty cool.

The software he was demonstrating is still in Beta. It won't be released for months yet.

Apparently it didn't screw up, he just couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Typical really.

THe audio stopped 15 minutes in - does QuickTime have functionality restrictions for unregistered versions? Or perhaps the stream just stopped working properly?

No. I think something's wrong. I tried looking at it and I couldn't even connect. Usually it plays just fine.

                        So was Bill Gates'.

Nonsense -- it clearly became unresponsive. He was hitting buttons and trying to quit out, nothing happened.

It's either a lockup bug which took down OS X, or it's not easy to use.

You might be able to find a torrent of the keynote. There was a hi res one doing the rounds for a while.

I just wish other companies would try to match the exterior appeal of Apple. I'm going to aim at testing some of these out in person, and see how they feel.
The Toshiba M30 looks pretty cool. Don't know if its in your price range, though. I'm more and more sceptical about Dell. A friend of mine got one. When he types a bit too hard, the touchpad senses it and the cursor moves. A pain in the ass. He called Dell. Their answer? We can do nothing for you.

It just didn't make sense -- I was referring to the Bill Gates BSOD.

Good luck explaining how that wasn't the program screwing up...
