Sony is a terrible example to use -- the company is imploding internally with only one division making a profit. There was huge infighting in the company which caused it to miss the MP3 player boat, as well. The Playstation itself was opposed by much of the company, and was barely allowed to exist. Now it's about the only thing making Sony money.

It's the perfect example for the case to split a company up, not to keep it together.

Even a different brand while under the same company would suffice (think Lexus vs Toyota).

Sony has had a problem keeping its costs down and has been slow to react. That's just bad mangement. Over all the company is stronger because they have better credit and have such high cash flows then if they were smaller units.

It's bad management because it's such a huge company with such diverse interests that the business groups cannot agree with eachother.

Sony Music didn't want to have anything to do with MP3 Players, for obvious reasons. They prevented the release of any, enough to give away marketshare to everyone else.

The bad management includes having so many competing interests under one umbrella.

Yes, they do have to many units. They should sell the music/movie business and just concentrate on electronics.

The Movie/Music business was the only other business to make money.

Electronics lost money, Computer entertainment made money (Playstation).

Oracle's "Oracle Financial" and its kin don't really compete with Peoplesoft's produts.

They're far less functional and pretty much rarely used in comparison.

All the more reason to do it. Spin off or sell the profitable and completely non-core movies/music unit when you can get the best price. Then use the money to rebuild the core electronics unit. Go after previously neglected niches such as MP3 players and cut costs by closing factories in high cost places (Japan) and opening new ones in low cost areas (China & India). Result a profitable and focused company which still can dominate electronics.

If you broke it down even further into say consumer electronics, corporate sales, and computers then you'll end up with a company to small to dominate and they'll be swollowed by competetors. Size matters but you need to maintain a core focus.

The problem isn't with her lacking any balls, it's with her not understanding her market, being a philosopher and all.

GP is giving his thumbs up to this move, wherever he is.

Sony is a weak company. A vast destroyer of value. Toshiba ain't so hot, either.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
