  • Google Maps

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

Very nice. Much easier interface than mapquest or msn. Click-and-drag is awesome. Only complaint right off is the number of textboxes on the initial interface - it is not completely clear what is the difference between some.

Edit: Am I the only one surprised that I posted this before Asher did?

        Must...resist...temptation...to say something...

At least you can get information about where you presently work and live.

Hmm, Vancouver information is there - I guess Calgary just didn't make the significance radar. (Oh bummer, I failed to resist!)

It's on their overview map, but not any details.

I assume their information will expand to cover more areas as the project matures.

Fail to show local road information:
            Calgary
            Edmonton
            Regina
            Halifax
            St. John's

It is a very nice design. Puts the other sites to shame.

                  Finally!

I've been waiting for an Internet mapping project as ambitious as this which would be backed by a corporation with very large bandwith resources for a long time... basically since the first days I were using the Internet (which would be around 1997).

Thumbs up to Google... I hope they'll be able to get the whole planet covered.

Their geography seems limited as there is suddenly nothing to the west of Alaska... but it's well done. Hope they can get the rest of the world covered soon.

I reserve judgement until a Trondheim test is possible. Looks good though.

                          Re: Google Maps

It's looking good indeed, but it's a shame only the US (and a bit) is covered. I hope that improves.

The ones on the right? They're examples of what you could enter in the search box at the top, as the title "Example searches" above them suggests.

Ok, that's pretty cool. Especially the click and drag thing.

This is so fvcking cool! Very slick!

It feels like it's running on my machine rather than from a remote server. The number of images pre-rendered must be huge!

Mapquest must be thinking "we're totally screwed."

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
