Nah, they're still floating around out there.

Just run a search on the title.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Conclusion we reached after roughly 15 seconds of thinking:

        [01º02'18"] http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/me...age/index.html
[01º02'45"] Kassi: Yeah, TMM made a thread about it on 'poly.
[01º03'04"] VJ: Ah. I just had to add it here too, because I found it hilariously absurd.
[01º03'22"] The funny thing about is is that I doubt real Islamic militants published the pic.
[01º03'45"] It's probably a marketing scheme for the toy company... "our models look VERY REAL, they even fooled the US military".
[01º03'46"] Can't be them, it reeks of a student prank miles away
[01º04'11"] well, it could be bums with no responsibility and too much time in their hands too.
Stupid media, always trying to whore every single scandal and negative news item they can in order to gain audience, no matter how less credibility it has.
The photo is an obvious fake if you'll compare it's head to the other parts of it... certainly didn't fool me. Then again, these experts who make up the news items probably have never seen a photoshopped picture before.

If the terrorists have to resort to using action figures to pretend that they have a hostage, then it proves that we are winning the war on terror.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

I think you should take another look at it then, because it certainly isn't fake. The soldier is that action figure and the gun pointed at its head is the gun from the set. The photo isn't photoshopped at all, it's just at a smaller scale than what you'd think. The text on that flag also seems to indicate that. Seeing how rough and big the lettering is, it's probably chalked on it. Not to mention the texture of the wall.

So it looks like you have been fooled.

Have they carried out the threat yet? Will a tube of glue patch him up or what?

I'm shocked. Not only will they blow people up and decapitate hostages, now they're also trying to fool us. I mean, they're so dishonest it really sucks big time.

Next they'll have spiders in matchboxes and try to scare the crap out of unsuspecting curious folk.
