  • Christians issue gay warning on SpongeBob video

Conservative groups criticize maker's 'tolerance pledge'

SpongeBob, who lives in a pineapple under the sea, was "outed" by the U.S. media in 2002 after reports that the TV show and its merchandise are popular with gays. His creator, Stephen Hillenburg, said at the time that though SpongeBob was an oddball, he thought of all the characters in the show as asexual.

It is not the first time that children's TV favorites have come under the critical spotlight of the Christian right. In 1999, the Rev. Jerry Falwell described Tinky Winky, the purse-toting purple Teletubbie, as a gay role model.

Why do Christians feel they have the right to define everyones morality? I'm currently exploring the Christian religion to see if it is something I want to be a part of and I am really turned off by this self-righteous attitude.

I'm not gay. I like Spongebob. I think the shows are educational and fun for kids. And I know a lot of kids that enjoy Spongebob. If those kids turn gay when they get older I seriously doubt that old Spongebob will be responsible for their sexual preference....

I hope the consensus is that the person making the statements in the article linked above is not representative of Christianity at large and is just some jerk on an ego trip.

There sure are a lot of Christian jerks with ego trips, it's rather suspicious to always say they're isolated incidents, when there's so damn many of them.

They're isolated the lot of them. Christians are too stupid to communicate.

Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

It's a typical sympton of sexual repression; one projects ones fears and insecurities about feelings and inclinations within themselves on other people (so fear of themselves are projected as intolerance of others).

            Well,
he seems to be male, has no girlfriend and has as best friend a male starfish named Patrick,
so there can be no other conclusion than that he is gay
            (just joking )

It is really interesting how much fear many conservative christians seem to have about gays (and an indicator that ruling a country better shouldn´t be left to fundamentalist (no matter if it are christians or muslims))

Yeah I posted this on my website. I'm wondering.. it is hilarious that these christian fundamentalists jump to the conclusions. But hey, I like Spongebob but I'm gay... it has nothing to do with it though. I just think it is funny (my sexual orientation doesn't make me want to watch it lol.. now if we were talking about Queer As Folk that's a different story.. but this is a simple cartoon). I think self-righteous attitudes are a big part of the christian religion, and also arrogance.

This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

A lot of churches and preachers are not following what Jesus taught and are not representative of what Christianity is suppose to be. So, my advice is to ignore them and go straight to the source. Read the Bible, starting with the New Testament, and ask yourself if you can accept what Jesus preached. Because when it is all said and done, Jesus is not going to care one wit what church or denomination you were part of. He will only care if you loved Him.

After you become a Christian, you can try to find a church that matches your beliefs. But don't let churches influence your opinion of Christianity. Sadly, there are too many churches that are giving Christianity a bad rep.

'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"
