Unfortunatley we are eternally tied to Iraq for the next 50 years, whether we want to withdraw or not, it's not an option.

Yep. They're the next Germany or Japan (best-case scenario) or Korea (worst-case scenario).

    Probably Korea...

Well, we have to leave sometime, so I don't see the shame in making our departure sometime after the election. I don't know what the climate will be like after the election, it's possible that conditions might be favorable for our withdrawal.

Does anyone know if the process for the registration of candidates has begun?

I want us to leave Iraq the moment we can do so without breaking any of the short sighted promises we made about our committment to not leaving too early. I would have them pull out today except that would so clearly break so many of those promises that it would encourage a huge upswing in terrorism resulting from enemies of the US concluding that the US must have withdrawn in response to all the terracts and to the insurgency.

There's probably some decent way of making a long stay in iraq possible from an economic point of view. Perhaps weapon manufacturers could rent different parts of the country for tests for example. That way everyone wins.

Sadly this is true. It sure feels as if we are stuck here now that Bush got us in there but I sure as hell wish he hadn't gotten us in there in the first place. The only people this sad sorry enterprise ever had any realistic chances of helping was the Iraqis and that is only going to be if the Iraqis work damn hard to make the situation work out. How can we be sure they are up to it?
