The last game had, I think, around 5 active players, and a couple that would only log on when they were needed to moth QCannons. 
I am all for open players in a new game, or an asset based tournament game (problem with the asset game is getting everyone in on time).
Opinions? Also, I like doing sectors = players * 200, and I think sectors / 4 is good for turns per day.
