So true... It's interesting how you spelled his last name. It's not the first time I see it written like that. His actual name was Elcano. I guess there are many other discordances like this. A funny one that springs to my mind is Thomas Moore = Tomas Moro

            "Fundo Caracas?"
            "Acerte a fundarla!!!"
"Acerto a fundarla... y tanto acerto, que la fundo en pleno centro de Caracas! Que YA ESTABA FUNDADA! Y el no lo vio..."
            "Es que, con el apuro!"

They can't even agree on where he's from, let alone on how to say his name!

my favourite explorer is Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, I read a lot about him and I really liked his history,
by the way, Pizarro was under his command, so when Pizarro arrived to America the spaniards didn´t even know that the Pacific ocean existed..., first point in the "debate"

It is the standard english spelling. Since I've been posting here, I have noticed that quite a few spanish names are spelled different in English. I wonder why that is? Ignorence on the part of English translations is most likely. I used to read French fairly well (years ago, and not anymore, I'm sorry to say) and the same thing happens when french is translated to english. Most histories mispell names. I wonder if we will ever get a consenses on this. Probaly not.
