From Vandalucia or Vandalicia, i.e. "Land of the Vandals". Also Sardinia was called "Vandalica insula" once...

100% agree with Prometeus; that's the reason. I wrote about that in the Barbarian Webpage a few years ago. Regrettably I lost the link to the site I also wrote about Asterix in that page. So you ask, what has Asterix got to do with the barbarians? Excellent Q. I do not know, but Asterix was there among the likes of Conan, so...
Nope... Southern France was named Gothia... no ideas...

As "Gascunya", land of gascons, "Catalunya" could means land of catalons (catalans), the origin of "catal" could be similar as "catar" (this second one in the occitain etnic zone, nearly to the catalanesque etnic zone), but the true version is unknown. Other versions ask to germanic versions, but the mos probably is a medieval verions to say all the original counts as one entity.
Usually people says that "Catalunya" and "El Principat de Catalunya" is the same, but is false, due that the first one is the name of the actual autonomous community and the second the historical name (used after the unification of the counts under the Count of Barcelona). The second one is the actual Catalunya plus the "fifth province" of Perpinyà (Perpignan), Andorra and "La Franja de Ponent", a sector that actually is in the aragonese autonomous community (and I ask ¿why?, the usual border between Catalonia and Aragon always was the Cinca river... Only the Matarranya shire was originaly in Aragon...).
And a final line, Catalunya ISN'T the same as PaÃs Valencià and Ses Illes Balears, is the same etnic-cultural group (catalanesque, not catalan, group), but different nations.
