  • Actually both light troop types include ranged units, as they are intended to be a mix of javaliners, bowmen, slingers, spearmen and the like. Light infantry is kind of a peasant army, so they´re worse in combat but cheaper to buy. Foot soldiers are more disciplined, though they have no advantages in deserts and mountains (while the light infantrist do).

I didn´t want to include pure ranged unit types as there were much too many different forms and all of them were accompagnied by melee fighters anyway; So I simply made them a mixed force...

      • Ok, thanks!

EDIT: Wait a minute; if foot soldiers are equipped with spears, among other things, why are they so vulnerable to cavalry? Does that mean that only the nations with hoplites have a good counter for cavalry?

        • OOC: appleciders, you know that Egypt and Carthage are allied, right?

          • OOC: And also at war with Persia?

            • OOC: Yes, but I'm just making sure you understand that my little military build-up isn't intended to threaten you. Especially since Egypt and Carthage have been at war in the past. It's just to eliminate or assimilate the nomads in the area.

EDIT: And I've talked to Persia about this, and he's dropping the war. It's peace, and I think it has been for a turn or two, reading the back logs.

              • Persia and Carthage are still at war. Are you certain you read the updates correctly? It just said that Egypt and Carthage have officially aligned and are declaring moving eastward to Persia.

                • Carthage and Egypt have been allied for a while, and Persia and Egypt have been at peace for a little bit. In any case, I'm not getting involved in any Persia-Carthage war, at least not yet. I want peace with both of them, but what they do otherwise is their own business.

Is it possible for us to pass through your borders?

Well, foot soldiers are mixed troops, while phalanx units are much more specialized. Also note that cavalry may be countered by other cavalry and heavy infantry (like swordsmen).

Joining Carthage in its fight against Persia, the Egyptian armies have started marching east.
For this purpose, the Pharao has ordered the training of 4,000 additional horsemen. They have been added to the Pharao´s army.

                            • OOC: I'm sure Sinai was Egyptian originally, I'm not sure if Egypt has anything of Persia's. I think it's the other way around.

So cavalry and swordsmen counter cavalry? What on earth is the point of foot infantry then? Just cannon fodder? I may change my troop purchasing plan in that case

                              Egypt to Carthage:
                              (secret)
Maybe. I'm not going to allow massive armies to just waltz through Egypt, certainly not without some payment for passage. You could go much cheaper by trireme along the Egyptian coast, but you'd have to deal with the Macedonian Navy and such and so forth. I'm open to the possibility, but at the moment it's not my first choice, I'd need a very good reason to let you through.
