Welcome to the NES290: Alternate History NES! This is an alternate history NES based on a novel How Few Remain by Harry Turtledove. It is set in April 1881, just after the outbreak of the Second Mexican War between the United and Confederate States of America. The war is over the sale of two Mexican provinces, Chihuahua and Sonora, from the Empire of Mexico to the Confederacy, which has already taken over the former Spanish province of Cuba. Union Pres. James G. Blaine, the first Republican since 1864, appalled at the prospect of the Confederates having a Pacific coast, has demanded their return to Mexico. The Confederate president, James Longstreet, is appealing to the Confederacy's allies, France and Britain, to intervene, but they will refuse to do so if the South does not abolish slavery after the war.
In Europe, Chancellor Bismark united Germany after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and the French are still stinging from their defeat. Germany has also begun to claim territory in Africa, which Britain is eyeing with great suspicion. Austria and Russia are looking to acquire territory from the slowly collapsing Ottoman Empire, while France and Britain are trying to keep the Ottomans in the Balkans to prevent the Russians and Austrians from becoming too powerful there.
In West Asia, friction is developing between Persia and the Ottoman Empire. A power struggle is beginning to develop in East Asia between the Japanese and Russian Empires, at the expense of the resentful Chinese.
In South America, the Brazillian Empire and the nation of Argentina are exchanging some bones of contention, while the European nations are trying to prevent any one nation from dominating the continent.

Your military is affected by two things: size and tech level. Size can often be countered by the amount of territory a nation controls.
-You may attempt to increase the size of your Army or Navy. The time it takes and how much it increases depends on your economy, how large it already is, and the amount of territory or coastline you control. Navy takes longer than Army to increase. Other factors, such as war, patriotism, etc. may also randomly increase or decrease sizes.
-You may attempt to upgrade the technology level of your Army or Navy. Upgrade time depends on how large it is, your economy, and other factors.

-Your economy is a general indicator of how well your country is doing. Economy can increase or decrease on its own due to factors such as war.

Marxian Socialist (Communist)

Your nation's government will affect how you conduct diplomacy and war, as well as the nation's military and economy.
-Countries with a low economy are more likely to go socialist.
-Republican and Constitutional Monarchial governments are harder to wage war under and are more apt to resist a change of government.
-Absolute Monarchies are almost limitless in the power invested in their leader, but those under it will often attempt to assassinate, remove, or limit their leader in favor of a more representative form of government.
-Countries that have suffered from a major defat in a war are apt to go Totalitarian.
EDIT: Correcting typo, added Totalitarian gov't.
