  • SMNESA What has the world come to?

Aight y'all, here's the game thread in all her glory, it will have maps and whatnot lataz when ski reexplains vb code to me.

sorry about the lateness, but I've been goin thru lots of stuff lately.

Main rules I'm gonna lay down here:
    1. No communicating with other nations unless your nation borders theirs on the same land mass, or if they have a close island (in the same archipelago, if you're unsure, assume you do not have contact.)
    2. Resources available determine what you can do, obviously if you have no mountains, and are not trading with someone who does, then you cannot have the mines necessary to produce golden currency... be creative and devise something else!
    3. I will penalize writers if they act like they don't care about the story aspect of the game, this will be on an exponentially progressive scale, so if something unfortunate happens for no real reason... Write More!!

Battle Calculation: I'm gonna bust into an AOL chat room to do battle calculations with the random # generator, the room name will be SMESApolyton and it will be private, roll info will be posted with a description of battle results by me. Minuses and plusses will be assigned based on: 1. Cleverness, 2. Story Quality, 3. Story Length (don't be too short or too long).

(all numbers will be added or subtracted from the defenders based on both stories, so bonuses to attackers are minuses and bonuses to defenders are plusses.)

    Standing battle bonuses:
+1 defenders automatically get this for attrition (borrowed from RoN hehe)
+2 for reinforcements from another country on the way.
    -1 for significantly advantaged forces.
-5 for EXTREMELY advantaged forces. (to get this your WHOLE army will have to be in one place)

I will also account for terrain later, me tired now tho, Skilord can add, I'm putting another thread after this for world history.

The Mighty Kingdom of Crud rises from the mud!! The king is quick to claim the mountains to the south as part of his kingdom, he sends out runners (on horseback) to go plant flags and search for minerals. He also sends out diplomats to Caecilina, Bachma, and Khosak Tribes. They have been sent with a messege of peace, and orders to open trade. And in the long existing gold mine to the east production is increased, as the King hopes to become rich.

The people of Crud are content with thier lives, they live under a fair king who understands thier needs, but he is aging and his son has little to promise in the way of leadership...

Backstory and Histroy of Sylvannia Part One

There are few facts, but much legends surrounding the Grand Duchy of Sylvannia and the ruling von Carstein bloodline. Vampiric in nature the von Carsteins were destined from the beginning to become the most powerful and important of its kind in the world today. Indeed Sylvannia is in its zenith under the rulership of Duke Vlad over the dark and inhospitable island.

Before the advent of the von Carsteins, and in fact since the begiining of historical records, Sylvannia has always been referred to as a cursed and evil land. It surface for the most part is covered by dark and dangerous forrests, its soil unproductive and poor. it is a land where the darkest energies of mnagic flow strong. The dead long hav a reputation for not resting easily, attested by the Sylvannian custom of burying their dead, 6 foot deep and upside down, to make it harder for them to claw out.

The vile noblemen, long since practioners of the dark arts and the lore of necromancy, built their castles and keeps at mystical points where the winds of magic flow their strongest. Sylvannians are kept in a state of misery and superstitous ignorance while their squalid hamlets are dominated with ruthless cruelty.

It was almost five centuries ago that the von Carsteins took power in the Dukedom. The then duke, Otto von Drak died without a male heir and after a quick intercine war Manfred von Carstein seized the throne. Majority of the aristocracy at first did not recognise Manfred as their new monarch, but soon were 'persuaded' to do so. The best of them Manfred made into lesser vampires, so that they could form his enternal bodygard and be the generals of his undead legions. Queen Neffretia III of Lahmia, in the norther half of the island did not interfere, as she failed to see the threat posed by Mafred's ascension.

Sylvannia was transformed into a efficent country. Manfred ruled tow long centuries, using diffrent names and guises as to not arouse suspicion, over his unnatural longevity. He bided his time waiting for the right moment to strike.

Less than three centuries ago, Manfred revealed his true nature to the world, that of a vamire lord. He attacked Lahmia at the head of a horde made of the regular Sylvannian army and countless legions of the living dead. The Wars of Vampiric Ascendacy had begun. Lahmia was devestated, as Manfred rampaged throughout the nation for forty years. During this long period the fortunes of the war changed many times. More than once Manfred was cut down by a hero's blade or a lucky cannon shot, and every time his army suffered severe casualties.

Unfortuanltley for Lahmia, the Duke always wore a powerful amgic ring that granted him amazing regenartive powers. Manfred always retruned from the netherworld ad the victims of famine, pestilence and the war were always there to replenish his armies.

In the frst war's fiftith year, after a series of great victories, Manfred's army was immense. The Sylvannians reached the capital of Nekhraka, and laid seige to the greatses city of Lahmia. the seige lasted for moths with the Lahmians losing all hope. When the final assault came, the High Preistess of Lahmia faced Manfred herself on the battlements of Nekhraka. Sensing that she could not alone win this duel, the High Priestess decided to sacrafice her own life, in an attempt to destroy the Duke. She let Manfred stab her with his sword and with her last strength she grabbed Manfred and dragged both of them off the walls.

The two figures fell in an embrace of death and impaled themselves on one of the many stakes littering Nekhraka's moat. legends say that Manfred's ring had been stolen the night before by the greatest theif in the known world.

Wherever the truth lies, that was the end of the first Vampiric Duke of Sylvannia. With Manfred gone, the Sylvannians were forced into retreat. ver half the Vampiric generals were dead, but sogreat were the causalites inflicted on Lahmia that no pursuit was possible. Facing rebellion at home the Queen o Lahmia was forced to deal with her own subjects then to press into Sylvannia. This way the pernicous lords of Sylvannia were granted an interval to remarshall their strength.

The remaining von Carsteins reached Sylvannia where they hid to lick their wounds. Soon a bitter stuggle broke out, to decide who would tak the titile of Duke now that Manfred was gone. After years of internal strife Konrad vonm Carstein prevailed.

Konrad was a mad and violent individual , feeared by his servants as much as his enemies. he immediatley launched another campaign agains Lahmia, in a vain attempt to emulate Manfred's victories. Far less skilled a tactian than his predecessor, Konrad was stopped at nthe Battle of Grim Moor. The Duke fell to the hero Helmar, soon to be prince married to Queen Neffretia IV.

In the aftermath of the second war, the current Duke Vlad von Carstein took command. Vlad is a towering figure of a man, with a mane of black hair and percing eyes. A subtle, devious and trecherous individual, he is know to at times posses an evil temprament that could easily esculate into beserker fury. There are times when only his wife, Isabella can calm him without blood being spilt. Isabella is Vlad's most trusted confidante and the only person he truly trusts.

Two more centureis passed under Vlad. He rebuilt Sylvannia and repaired relations with Lahmia. Biding his time, Sylvannia prosepered while he ssecretly rebuilt the army.

Vlad's time came as Lahmia crashed into civil war asd the High Prince upsurped the Queen';s cotnrol with the High Priestess's forces joining the Queen. Vlad's undead leagions crossed the Sylvannian border in the depths of winter and marched through the snows to Nekhraka, putting any villages they met to the sword to add them to the ranks of his army. Victory followed Victory and mere rumours of Vlad's apporach were enough to send them fleeing from their homes to freeze to death in the snow. His forces reached Nekhraka late winter and he foundte city battlements empty of defenders.

Vlad had accomplished what his predecessors had not done. With their capital gone, the High Prince surrendered his forces to Sylvannia. In return the High Prince was give the 'kiss of blood' and gifted eternal undeath as a Vampire. Without the other half of the Lahmian resistance the Queen and the High Preistess were forced into exile. Within the then years after the annexation fo Lahmia by Sylvannia, both the Lahmian rulers had died of mysterious causes.

That was fifty years ago, and Duke Vlad and his wife Isabella still regin over the Sylvannian island and ready themselves for the next challange.

              A More Detailed History
One sunny day, a very long time ago, a young shepard was in a great panic. He had lost his sheep, and would surely be held accountable if they were killed. Further and further he traveled from his home, searching relentlessly.

By chance, and chance alone, he stumbled on what would make the Bachaian people who they are today. When he sat down, he accidentally placed his hand on a very sharp, and hard object. Swearing vividly, he brushed the dust off of it, and picked it up. It was silver, like the water looks on a cold foggy morning. He didn’t think much of it, it was too big to put in his pocket, so he kept it in his hand.

After hours of searching, and when he had given up all hope, he heard the sounds of his sheep being terrorized. He ran to the sound quickly, but cautiously, scared for himself and his sheep.

When he saw his sheep, he also saw the beast that had already ripped two sheep apart, and not even eaten them. It seems it was killing them for the sake of killing something. The beast’s set eyes on him, and dropped the sheep carcass that he had been ripping to shreds. He charged at the boy, smelling another easy kill in the air. The boy, hopeless, stuck out the silver, sharp rock* he found, hoped for the best, and tried not to start crying. His closed eyes opened slowly, was he dead? No, he was alive, with blood on his face, and a beast at his feat. The beast had impaled himself onto the rock, and was dead before either of them knew what happened..

He bent over, to retrieve the “rock” from the throat of the beast, who must have lunged up at the boy’s face.
Upon returning home, few believed him, until he showed the rock* he had used, and the blood on it and himself. He lead some men to the beast, who has still laying on the ground. They then ordered the boy to take them to where he found the rock, thinking there might be a few more. They were hoping for a few more rocks, maybe enough to go hunting . What they found was enough of this rock* to equip an army for many years to come. Melting it, and shaping it to their needs, it could serve as both armour and weapons.

The boy has long been dead, and the beast long forgotten, but the rock he found remains the cornerstone of the Bachaian people, and will for many years to come.

*The rock is, of course metal, but was assumed to be a rock by the boy, and many others.

The Bachaian people, have for a long time sent men up to the mountains with mules, to bring back the metal. They have now started to colonize the mountain itself, on the ledges, in caves, and anywhere’s they can settle.

The Imperial Sultan Rijal I of Brunei, Sultan of Brunei, Chief od Sarawak, King Overlord of Mataram, Sultan Overlord of Makassar, Atjeh, and Malacca, and Grand Chief of Flores, looked proudly over the map of his domains. In one and a half centuries, Brunei had risen from being just one Sultanate of the many Sultanates, Chiefdoms, Kingdoms, and other entities in the Indori Archipelago. Now, thanks to the conquests (termed "colonizations") of Lower Surabaya and Upper Makassar by Ahmed I, Upper Surabaya by Sharif I, Flores, Palembang in Atjeh, and Lower Makassar by Suleyman I the Great, Bali and several small islands by Bulkiah I the Conqueror, Sovereign Atjeh by Qahhar I, and finally Malacca by Rijal himself, Brunei controlled the entire archipelago and some of the mainland of Oriei.

Rijal, however, was not satisfied with his empire. "Aadam! John!" he called. Aadam was his Director of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and John was the Imperial Commander-in-Chief (ICC). What a name, "John," Rijal thought. Why couldn't kids just stick with traditional names, instead of getting nicknames that were what they called "European names," coming from Southern Oriei near Cochin and Kolo in Manguang. John's real name was Jalal, but we never responded to anything but "John".

"FInally you're here," the Sultan said as they entered his Imperial Throne Room. "Aadam, have you managed the convince any of the Ayutthayan Princes to be incorporated or at least fall under our Suzerainty?"
"I'm afraid not," replied the DFA. "Several agreed to ally with us, but the remember the Perak Massacre."
"That was 12 years ago!! Can't they get over it?? It's not as if its our fault the Malaccans wanted to change their mind. as the Princedoms would stay loyal nothing like that would happen."
"I tried explaining, but they wouldn't listen."
"Well I guess it's time for Plan B. John, is the navy ready in the Straits of Sarawak and the Bruneii, Atjehan, Floresian, and Malaccan Armies ready in Perak?"
                "Yes sir," John replied.
"Aadam, send an ultimatum to the Ayutthayans demanding immediate agreement to Suzerainty."
"An ultimatum?" asked Aadam, looking confused. "But sir, I thought we were going to slowly incorporate them like you, your father, and your grandfather did to Atjeh and Malacca."
"No longer. I don't have the patience to wait 20 years. Send the ultimatum. Dismissed." As Aadam and John left the room, Rijal added, "Oh, John, tell George that I want him to move into the lands between Malaccan and Taungu." George was the Malaccan Minister of Colonial Defense and Expansion (MalMCDE).

Orders: Invade Malacca if they don't agree to the ultimatum. Colonize the southern lands between Malacca and Taungu.

                    Caecinia blurbs:

Hardy and Mobile (Socially and Physically)

A people most known for their annoying habit of surviving and usually prospering in adverse circumstances despite apparently lacking any exceptional abilities. The “nation” of Caecinia is actually an alliance of clans, city-states, and guilds, bound together by some common cultural elements, an intertwined economy, and historical precedent.
Caecinia is predominantly secular. A large number of people are nominally part of the faith of Nardism. The central tenets of Nardism include a belief that people achieve happiness by learning and acting in accord with the Just Action Principle, which says to only use force in response to force, that the best human interaction is that of willing cooperation and mutual benefit to all partaking in the interaction. Another belief is that when people die they become invisible spirits that stay on earth and occasionally interfere but mostly keep learning until they become very wise and either leave for a different world to seek new learning or manifest themselves in a physical form. Other religions are welcome, as long as their adherents stick fairly well to the Just Action Principle.

                    Story/Actions:

The city of Shuqba, capital of Cacinia, was bursting at the seams with an increasingly malcontent population, in a time when it was already on the verge of decline. Bad crop years had led to many people abandoning the surrounding countryside to come to the city. But the industries of Shuqba, already hard pressed to employ their own population, could not provide for the new people.
So the High Integrator, head of the Council of Overseers, made a deal with the various clans and guilds to expand the boundaries of opportunity for the Caecinians. The merchants and the navy are being sent north to explore and settle the coastline up there. Settlers are going mainly west and southwest, with some south and east. Diplomats with trade caravans are going to existing settlements to cement ties and bring the cities fully into the Caecinian alliance. Just as a backup soldiers are “escorting” these forces.

                    Caecinia to Crud:

                    That is agreeable to us
Those walls are absent of glory as they always have been. The people of tents will inherit this land.
