I may be wrong but i thought full naval removed the trade penalty..... Possibly a new thing for decentralization?
As for favorite nations, mine are granada (1419... NOT 1492
), the palatinat, and denmark. Oh, and the papal states, italy has some nice territories.
Byzantium is pretty tough, as is granada. Usually your fate is decided on one battle.
The knights seems pretty tough too. Trebizond is even harder then byzantium IIRC and get eaten up quicker.Comment

). Trebezond starts out as part of a larger alliance of East Anatolian states. It's easier to survive for a little while. Also, the Ottomans don't get a core on you until 1451, so they won't go to war with you as often.
