That's what I'm finding out in my current game, actually up until now I haven't played Japan.

On top of the revolts I have inflation climbing (currently it is at 5.4% and I have automatic bank loans at 5.1%). My economy is almost in shambles. Japan is quite the challenge!

I've never played Japan myself, but a tip I've seen is to take out Korea and Manchuria ASAP, and China if you are skilled enough, since the massive revolts only happens in the Japanese home provinces.

I was thinking of an early rush on Korea but witheld hoping to build Japan's economy up peacefully. However given my current game situation I may have to start over and give your tip a try.

It is 1650 in my Sweden game. I have taken Norway, Gotland, Iceland, and Greenland from Denmark, and I have colonies and trading posts in Newfoundland and in a few of the small islands in the eastern Caribbean (for some reason, Spain had only gotten around to colonizing St. Thomas, thier loss, more $$$ from sugar for me; it looks like they were concentrating on Mexico and Cuba, they haven't even touched the Inca yet). I am currently concentrating on colonization, I won't be starting wars for a while because I have 20 BB points.

Oh, and this is turning out to be a very unusual game. Spain has conquered Portugal and SCOTLAND(!). Brandenburg has ceased to exist, Bremen is the dominant power in Northern Germany. The OE is expanding into Ukraine and Russia instead of the ME and North Africa. The only thing normal in Europe is England not being invaded, and Austria becoming the Great White Blob.

Spain seems to have a weak AI. It is more interested in attacking people in Europe then colonizing so it never achieves its historical empire.

Even when Spain decides to do expansion in america, the AI ineptitude becomes apparent.

Actually, Spain is one of my favourites since the game plays like a historical 'what if'. Brittany is another interesting game.

                  How ... odd??

In basically every game I've ever played Spain seems to have been the one constant. It always seems to end up all but annihilating the natives of South and Central America, colonising most of the Carribean and the South, and having a smattering of other territories from India through East-Asia.
I don't think I've ever seen them fail quite honestly ...

if you play on furious agressiveness, spain will act like oerdin said... otherwise, it´ll build it´s colonial empire and - most likely - diploannex portugal before it starts colonizing east africa...

Lesson taken from that fact: Never play on furious agressiveness.

Yes, people often mistakenly assume that agressiveness is a second difficulty setting. It's not - it's an AI setting, and can often make the game easier because the AIs are always in wars. Try playing with a more timid agressiveness instead. Some people hold that the most difficult setting is coward/very hard, but I personally prefer to play with weakling agressiveness.

I always play furious back it's the only way to get the ai to actually do anything.

                          I'll try a very hard/normal game next.

On coward/very hard, you have to work for your conquests. The real strategy is maneuvering the AI into a war because waiting for a CB event gets very depressing.
