It has 100 pages, 93 of which are actually information.

It's also very small, with small type.

And is everything explained in such a short manual for presumably such a complex game, or is it rather like the SMAC or Civ3 manual where many basics of the game are not explained, making it difficult for the beginner?

In the meawhile I'll start looking for a magnifying glass.

EU2 also has a tutorial. I HIGHLY recommend playing through all the tutorials. It helps explain the manual quite a bit.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'll probably buy the game Monday. I can't wait.

Oh yes, probably the Benelux version comes with 1.04. So need to worry about patches!

EU2's manual is at least better than Civ3's one IMO. It's crammed with information. And the few pages that don't tell anything about gameplay are filled with huge lists of beta testers.

                Quite correct.
The European Ubisoft release includes patch 1.04
The Polish release doesnt but there is a patch on the polish distributors site.

Once you've played the tutorial and read the manual there's a nice big forum full of 95% friendly users ready to give you advice.

Some of the historical events can sound kind of stupid if you have strayed too far from your historical position but that is understandable. The scripting is far superior to Eu1 and there are lots of dedicated fans improving them all the time. Its one of the major advantages for having clear text files and a scripting language.

Yes, I've already visited the official forums and plan to register once I've read the 68! page manual. I've got lots of questions, and a complaint! Confucianism is on all fronts worse than eg Buddhism. Not fair or fun I think. And since when is Japan Confucianist?? I thought it was Zen Buddhism or something like that.

Certainly read the manual first, despite its limitations.

Just be aware that there have been several patches/changes since its publication. In religion, for example, most of what you read in the manual has been tweaked. IIRC, the difference, currently between Buddhism and Confucianism is minor (but the latter is still slightly worse).

Look in the religion.csv file in the /Db directory for a matrix of current religion modifiers.

Ok, my current opinions about religion are based upon the FAQ thread in the EU forums. I'll check if they are still up to date.
